### 六祖彌遮迦尊者凡一

道化北天。有婆須蜜者。手提酒器。逆問祖云。師何方來。欲往何所。祖云。從自心來。欲往無所。云師識我手中物否。祖云。此是觸器。而負淨者。云還識我否。祖云。我即不識。識即非我。汝當稱名。吾後示汝本因。云我姓波羅墮。名婆須密。祖云。佛記汝。當紹祖位。即與剃度。頓悟宿因。

> A hermit appeared in the northern region of India, known as Vasumitra. Holding a wine vessel in his hand, he approached the Patriarch and asked, "Master, where do you come from, and where do you intend to go?" The Patriarch replied, "I come from my own mind, and I intend to go nowhere." Vasumitra asked, "Do you recognize what I hold in my hand?" The Patriarch said, "This is a vessel of defilement, yet one who carries it may still be pure within." Vasumitra then asked, "Do you recognize me?" The Patriarch answered, "I do not recognize you, for recognition is of the self, and the true self is beyond recognition. You should state your name, and I will reveal your original nature." Vasumitra said, "My surname is Bharadvaja, and my name is Vasumitra." The Patriarch declared, "The Buddha has foretold that you will carry on the Patriarchal lineage." Then he shaved Vasumitra's head, initiating him into monastic life, and in that moment, Vasumitra suddenly awakened to the karma of his past lives.

後付法眼。而說偈云。無心無可說。說得不名法。若了心非心。始解心心法。

> Then, transmitting the Dharma Eye to his successor, he spoke this verse: No mind, nothing to say— What is said cannot be called the Dharma. If you understand that mind is not mind, Only then do you grasp the mind's true teaching.
