### 十一祖富那夜奢尊者凡一

> Eleventh Patriarch, Venerable Punyayasas<note>Volume 1</note>

詣波羅奈國。有馬鳴大士。迎祖作禮。問云。我欲識佛。何者即是。祖云。汝欲識佛。不識者是。云佛既不識。焉知是乎。祖云。既不識佛。焉知不是。云此是鋸義。祖云。彼是木義。祖復問。鋸義者何。云與師平出。馬鳴却問。木義者何。祖云。汝被我解。馬鳴豁然大悟。

> Arriving in the country of Varanasi, there was the great master Asvaghosha, who welcomed the Patriarch and paid respects. He asked, "I wish to know the Buddha—what is it exactly?" The Patriarch said, "You wish to know the Buddha—that which does not know is it." Asvaghosha said, "If the Buddha does not know, how can one recognize it?" The Patriarch said, "If you do not know the Buddha, how can you say it is not?" Asvaghosha said, "This is the meaning of a saw." The Patriarch said, "That is the meaning of wood." The Patriarch then asked, "What is the meaning of a saw?" Asvaghosha said, "It is level with you, Master." Asvaghosha then asked, "What is the meaning of wood?" The Patriarch said, "You have been undone by me." Asvaghosha suddenly had a great awakening.

後付法眼。而說偈云。迷悟如隱顯。明暗不相離。今付隱顯法。非一亦非二。

> Then he transmitted the Dharma Eye, proclaiming this verse: Delusion and awakening are like hidden and revealed, Light and darkness do not depart from each other. Now I entrust this truth of hidden and revealed, Neither one nor two.
