### 十二祖馬鳴尊者凡一

> Twelve Ancestors: Venerable Ashvaghosha<note>All One</note>

得法之後。於華氏國。有迦毗摩羅者。三千眷屬。有大神力。祖問云。汝盡神力。變化若為。云我化巨海。極為小事。祖云。汝化性海得否。云何謂性海。我未甞知。祖云。性海者。山河大地。皆依建立。三昧六通。由茲發現。迦毗摩羅。聞是語已。契自本心。與三千徒。投祖出家。

> After attaining the Dharma, in the kingdom of Huashi, there was a man named Kapimala who had three thousand followers and possessed great supernatural powers. The Patriarch asked him, "If you exhaust your supernatural powers, what transformations can you manifest?" He replied, "I can transform into a vast ocean; that is an extremely trivial matter." The Patriarch said, "Can you transform into the ocean of your true nature?" Kapimala asked, "What is this ocean of true nature? I have never known of it." The Patriarch said, "The ocean of true nature is that upon which mountains, rivers, and the great earth all depend for their establishment, and from which meditative absorption and the six supernatural powers arise." Upon hearing these words, Kapimala awakened to his own original mind and, along with his three thousand followers, took refuge with the Patriarch and left home to seek the Way.

後付法眼。而說偈云。隱顯即本法。明暗元不二。今付了悟法。非取亦非離。

> Then, transmitting the Dharma Eye, he spoke this verse: Concealed and revealed—this is the original Dharma. Bright and dark are not two. Now I entrust the understanding of this Dharma— Neither grasping, nor letting go.
