### 十四祖龍樹尊者凡一

> Fourteenth Patriarch, the Venerable Nagarjuna<note>Volume 1</note>

具大知見。無所不通。游西印度。彼國人。多信福業。聞尊者為說妙法。各相謂言。人之福業。世間第一。徒言佛性。誰能覩之。祖云。汝欲見佛性。先須除我慢。彼眾云。佛性大小。祖云。非大非小。非廣非狹。無福無報。不死不生。彼聞理勝。悉回初心。悟無生忍。

> He possessed vast wisdom and penetrating insight, knowing all things without obstruction. He traveled to western India, where the people there largely placed their faith in the merit of good deeds. When they heard the Master expound the wonderful Dharma, they said to one another, "The merit of good deeds is foremost in this world. To speak merely of Buddha-nature—who can actually see it?" The Patriarch said, "If you wish to see Buddha-nature, you must first set aside pride and arrogance." The crowd asked, "Is Buddha-nature great or small?" The Patriarch replied, "It is neither great nor small, neither vast nor narrow. It brings no merit and no reward. It is neither born nor dies." Hearing that this principle surpassed their understanding, they all returned to their original minds and awakened to the truth of birthless patience.

有迦那提婆者。謁祖。祖知是智人。先令侍者。盛滿鉢水。置于座前。彼以一針。進而投之。忻然契會。

> A man named Kanadeva came to pay respects to the Patriarch. The Patriarch, recognizing him as a wise person, instructed an attendant to fill a bowl with water to the brim and place it before him. Kanadeva then took a needle and dropped it into the bowl, uniting in joyful understanding.

後付法眼。而說偈云。為明隱顯法。方說解脫理。於法心不證。無瞋亦無喜。
