### 十五祖迦那提婆尊者凡一

> Fifteen Ancestor Aryadeva

愽識辨慧。名聞諸國。後游巴連弗城。聞諸外道。欲障佛法。計之已久。祖執長幡。入彼眾中。彼云。汝何不前。祖云。汝何不後。彼云。汝似賊人。祖云。汝似良人。云汝解何法。祖云。汝百不會。云我欲得佛。祖云。我酌然得佛。云汝不合得。祖云。元道我得。汝實不得。云汝既不得。云何言得。祖云。汝有我故。所以不得。我無我故。我自當得。

> He was wise and discerning, renowned across many lands. Later, he traveled to the city of Pataliputra, where he heard that various non-Buddhist teachers were planning to obstruct the Dharma, having schemed for a long time. The Patriarch held a long banner and entered their midst. They said, "Why don't you go forward?" The Patriarch replied, "Why don't you go back?" They said, "You seem like a thief." The Patriarch replied, "You seem like an upright person." They asked, "What teaching do you understand?" The Patriarch replied, "You don't understand a hundred things." They said, "I wish to attain Buddhahood." The Patriarch said, "I will certainly attain Buddhahood." They said, "You are not worthy of attaining it." The Patriarch said, "Originally, the Way says I attain it; you, in truth, do not." They said, "Since you have not attained it, how can you say you will attain it?" The Patriarch said, "Because you have a self, you do not attain it. Because I have no self, I naturally shall attain it."

彼既詞屈。乃問云。汝名何等。祖云。我名迦那提婆。彼眾中。有上首羅睺羅多。聞語悔過。心即開悟。

> He could not argue further, so he asked, "What is your name?" The Patriarch replied, "My name is Kanadeva." Among the assembly, the leading disciple, Rahulata, upon hearing these words, repented of his faults, and his mind was immediately enlightened.

祖付法眼。而說偈云。本對傳法人。為說解脫理。於法實無證。無終亦無始。

> The Patriarch, transmitting the Dharma-eye, spoke this verse: To those who teach the Dharma, I explain the truth of liberation. In truth, there is no realization, No end, and no beginning.
