> Sixteenth Patriarch, Venerable Rahulata<note>Total: 1</note>

> After attaining the Dharma, he benefited living beings wherever he went. He arrived at the city of Shravasti, at the source of the Golden River, where he saw Samghanandi in deep meditation. The Patriarch waited for seven days before he emerged from samadhi. The Patriarch asked him, "Is your body in meditation, or is your mind in meditation?" Samghanandi replied, "Both body and mind are in meditation." The Patriarch asked, "If both body and mind are in meditation, what is there to enter or leave?" Samghanandi said, "Although there is entering and leaving, the nature of meditation is not lost. It is like gold in a well, or gold taken out of the well. Though the world moves between coming and going, the substance of gold remains eternally still." The Patriarch said, "If the gold is in the well, or if the gold is out of the well, gold has no motion or stillness. How can there be entering or leaving?" Samghanandi said, "Speaking of gold's motion or stillness—what is it that enters or leaves? Speaking of gold's entering or leaving—gold is beyond motion and stillness." The Patriarch said, "If the gold is in the well, what gold comes out? If the gold comes out of the well, what remains in?" Samghanandi said, "If the gold comes out of the well, what remains is not gold. If the gold is in the well, what comes out is not a thing." The Patriarch said, "This reasoning does not hold." Samghanandi said, "That principle is not to be clung to." The Patriarch said, "This reasoning will fall into error." Samghanandi said, "That meaning is not accomplished." The Patriarch said, "Your meaning is not accomplished, but mine is accomplished." Samghanandi said, "Though my meaning is accomplished, the Dharma is not mine." The Patriarch said, "My meaning is accomplished because I have no self." Samghanandi said, "If you have no self, what meaning is accomplished?" The Patriarch said, "Because I have no self, your meaning is accomplished." Samghanandi asked, "Venerable sir, who is your teacher, that you have realized this egolessness?" The Patriarch said, "My teacher is Kanadeva, who realized this egolessness." Samghanandi then praised him with a verse: "I bow to the teacher Kanadeva, Who has emerged through you. Because you are selfless, I wish to take you as my teacher." The Patriarch replied with a verse: "Because I am already selfless, You must see the self in me. If you take me as your teacher, Know that I am not the self, nor selfless." At that moment, Samghanandi was suddenly enlightened and immediately sought to be ordained.

> Then he entrusted the Dharma Eye, and spoke this verse: "In truth, there is nothing to attain in the Dharma— Neither grasping nor abandoning. The Dharma is beyond existence and non-existence; How could it arise from within or without?"
