> Seventeenth Patriarch, Venerable Sanghanandi<note>Total: 1</note>

> The son of King Adorned with Precious Treasures. Having come to the mountain dwelling, he saw a young boy holding a round mirror, who went directly before the Patriarch. The Patriarch asked, "How old are you?" The boy replied, "I am now a hundred years old." The Patriarch said, "You are still young—how can you speak of being a hundred years old? That is not reasonable." The boy said, "I do not understand reason; I am exactly a hundred years old." The Patriarch said, "Are you skillful in responding to circumstances?" The boy said, "The Buddha said: 'If a person lives a hundred years but does not understand the essence of all Buddhas, it is not as good as living one day and attaining complete clarity.'" The Patriarch said, "What does the object in your hand represent?" The boy said, "It is the great perfect mirror of all Buddhas—free from any flaw inside or outside. Two people can see it together, and their minds and eyes are alike." Thereupon he left home under the Patriarch, was named Gayashata, and was asked to serve as his attendant.

> One day, the wind blew and the bell at the temple's corner rang. The Patriarch asked, "Is it the wind that rings, or the bell that rings?" The disciple replied, "Neither the wind nor the bell rings—it is my mind that rings." The Patriarch asked, "And who is this mind?" The disciple said, "Because both are utterly still." The Patriarch said, "Excellent, excellent! Who but you will carry on my teaching?"

> Then he transmitted the Dharma Eye, speaking this verse: The mind-ground is fundamentally unborn; From conditions, the causes arise. Conditions and seeds do not hinder each other— Flowers and fruits are likewise so.
