### 十八祖伽耶舍多尊者凡一

> Eighteenth Patriarch, Venerable Gayashata<note>Chapter One</note>

得法之後。徧游諸國。至大月氏國。見一婆羅門舍。祖將入門。舍主鳩摩羅多問。是何徒眾。祖云。是佛徒眾。彼聞佛名。心神悚然。即閉其戶。祖良久敲門。彼云。此舍無人。祖云。答無者誰。彼聞語異。開門延接。投誠出家。

> After attaining the Dharma, he traveled through various countries. When he reached the country of Great Yuezhi, he saw the home of a Brahmin. As the Patriarch was about to enter, the master of the house, Kumaralata, asked, "What kind of followers are you?" The Patriarch replied, "We are followers of the Buddha." Upon hearing the name of the Buddha, the man was startled and felt a sense of awe, and he immediately closed his door. The Patriarch knocked for a long time, and the man said, "There is no one in this house." The Patriarch replied, "Then who is it that answers 'no one'?" Hearing the unusual response, the man opened the door and welcomed him in, sincerely renouncing the mundane life to become a monk.

後付法眼。而說偈云。有種有心地。因緣能發萌。於緣不相礙。當生生不生。

> Then, transmitting the Dharma Eye to his successor, he spoke this verse: There is a ground with seeds of mind, Causes and conditions make them sprout. Unhindered by conditions, Though born, they are truly unborn.
