### 二十祖闍夜多尊者凡一

> Twentieth Patriarch, Venerable Shakyamitra<note>Number One</note>

祖於羅閱城。廣興佛事。敷演頓教法門。

> The Master arrived at Vulture Peak, widely propagating the Buddha's teachings and expounding the sudden enlightenment teachings.

彼有學眾。唯尚辯論。有上首名婆修盤頭。一食不臥。六時。禮佛。清淨無欲。為眾所尊。祖欲度之。問彼眾云。此徧行頭陀。勤修梵行。可得佛乎。彼眾云。我師精進如是。何故不得。祖云。汝師與道遠矣。設行苦行。經於塵劫。皆虗妄之本。彼眾云。尊者蘊何德業。而譏我師。祖云。我不求道。亦不顛倒。我不一食。亦不雜食。我不知足。亦不貪欲。心無所希。名之曰道。時徧行聞是語已。發無漏智。祖須臾却問云。適吾對眾挫仁者。得無惱乎。云我責躬悔過以來。聞諸惡言。如風如響。況今獲飲無上甘露。返生熱惱耶。惟願大士。誨以妙道。祖云。汝久植德本。當繼吾宗。

> Among the Buddha’s disciples, there was a community that valued debate above all. Their leader was named Vasubandhu. He ate only once a day and never slept. He paid homage to the Buddha at all six periods of the day and night, living a pure life free from desires, and was revered by all. The Patriarch wished to guide him, so he asked the community, “This wandering ascetic, diligently cultivating the holy life—will he attain Buddhahood?” The community replied, “Our teacher is so diligent in his practice. Why would he not attain it?” The Patriarch said, “Your teacher is far from the Way. Even if he practices austerities for countless eons, it would all be rooted in illusion.” The community asked, “Venerable One, what virtues do you possess that you dare to criticize our teacher?” The Patriarch replied, “I do not seek the Way, nor am I deluded. I do not eat only once a day, nor do I eat indiscriminately. I am not content, nor do I crave. With a mind that hopes for nothing—this is what is called the Way.” Upon hearing these words, the wandering ascetic Vasubandhu awakened to the wisdom that transcends conditioned existence. The Patriarch then turned back to him and asked, “Just now, I humbled you before the assembly. Were you not upset?” Vasubandhu replied, “Ever since I began reflecting on my faults and regretting my wrongs, I have heard all kinds of harsh words—yet they pass like wind or echoes. How much more so now that I have tasted the supreme nectar of the Dharma? How could I harbor affliction? I only wish, Great Master, that you would teach me the wondrous Way.” The Patriarch said, “You have long planted virtuous roots. You shall carry on our tradition.”

後付法眼。而說偈云。言下合無生。同於法界性。若能如是解。通達理事竟。

> Then he transmitted the Dharma-eye and spoke this verse: "In that very moment, one realizes birthlessness, Aligned with the nature of the Dharma realm. If one can understand this, One penetrates both principle and phenomena completely."
