### 二十三祖鶴勒那尊者凡一

> Twenty-Third Patriarch, Venerable Haklena<note>Total of one</note>

生時天花散彩。地布金錢。收養王宮。廣現神變。後至中印度。有師子比丘。問云。我欲求道。當何用心。祖云。汝欲求道。無所用心。云既無用心。誰作佛事。祖云。汝若用心。即非功德。汝若無作。即是佛事。經云。我所作功德。而無我所故。師子聞之。頓入佛慧。

> At birth, heavenly flowers scattered their colors and the earth was strewn with gold. Raised in the royal palace, he manifested numerous miraculous transformations. Later, when he arrived in central India, there was a monk named Lion who asked him, "I wish to seek the Way—how should I apply my mind?" The Patriarch said, "If you wish to seek the Way, there is no need to apply the mind." Lion asked, "If no mind is applied, then who performs the work of Buddhahood?" The Patriarch replied, "If you apply the mind, that is not true merit. If you do nothing, that is the work of Buddhahood. As the sutra says, 'The merit I have accomplished is without any sense of a self who accomplishes it.'" Hearing this, Lion instantly entered the wisdom of Buddhahood.

祖付法眼。而說偈云。認得心地時。可說不思議。了了無可得。得時不說知。

> The Patriarch transmitted the Dharma Eye, and spoke this verse: When the mind-ground is recognized, One may speak of the inconceivable. Clearly, nothing is attained; When attainment occurs, it is not spoken as knowledge.
