> Twenty-Fourth Patriarch, Venerable Simha<note>Three in all</note>

> The Patriarch arrived in the country of Kashmir. He asked the meditation master Dhamadatta, “Sir, you practice meditative concentration. Why have you come here? Now that you are here, what do you mean by practicing concentration?” The master replied, “Although I have come here, my mind remains undisturbed. Concentration follows a person’s practice—how could it depend on a place?” The Patriarch said, “Since you have come, your concentration has arrived with you. If it has no fixed place, how can it depend on a person’s practice?” The master replied, “It is concentration that trains the person, not the person who trains concentration. Even though I have come here, my concentration is always being practiced.” The Patriarch said, “If the person does not practice concentration, but concentration trains the person, then when you first came, who was practicing that concentration?” The master said, “Like a pure and bright pearl, with no obstruction inside or out. If concentration is fully realized, it must be like this.” The Patriarch said, “If concentration is fully realized, it may resemble a pearl. But now I see you, and you are not among those of the pearl.” The master said, “Since the pearl is bright and clear, inside and out are entirely still. My mind is undisturbed, just like this purity.” The Patriarch said, “That pearl has no inside or outside—how could you fix it in stillness? If filth does not move or shake it, this stillness is not true purity.” Hearing these words, the master’s mind became suddenly clear and radiant.

> One day, the Patriarch met an elder who brought his son and asked, "This child is named Basheshita. From birth, he has kept his left hand clenched. Even now that he has grown, he cannot open it. I beg you, Venerable One, to reveal the karmic cause of this." The Patriarch looked at him intently, then said, "Return my pearl to me." The child immediately opened his fist and offered the pearl. Everyone was astonished. The Patriarch said, "In my previous life, I was a monk. When I went to the Dragon King's feast in the Western Sea, I received a pearl as an offering, which I gave to this child, Basheshita. Now he returns my pearl to me—this is only natural."

> The elder gave up his son and left home to seek enlightenment, attaining liberation.

> The Patriarch, about to repay an old karmic debt, imparted the mind-dharma in advance, and spoke this verse: When the true teaching of seeing and knowing is given, Seeing and knowing are the mind itself. When the mind is in this seeing and knowing, Seeing and knowing are present right now.

> In Kashmir, there were two heretics who practiced illusion arts. They disguised themselves as Buddhist monks and secretly entered the royal palace. When their deeds were discovered, the king of Kashmir grew furious and had monasteries destroyed. Then, wielding his sword himself, he said to the Patriarch, "Have you realized the emptiness of the aggregates?" The Patriarch replied, "I have already realized the emptiness of the aggregates." The king asked, "Are you free from birth and death?" The Patriarch answered, "I am already free from birth and death." The king said, "Then can you offer me your head?" The Patriarch responded, "My body is not even my own—how much less so my head?" The king then swung his blade, and a stream of white milk gushed out over ten feet high. The king's right arm immediately fell to the ground, and he died seven days later.

> Hsuan Sha said, "The great and small lion masters have never been able to take charge of their own heads." Xue Dou said, "A masterful sovereign—naturally, it is present."
