> Twenty-Fifth Patriarch, Venerable Vasishtha<note>Two in total</note>

母夢神劒。覺而有孕。既誕遇師子尊者。顯發宿因。密傳心印。適南天竺國中印度國王名迦勝。設禮供養。有外道號無我。為王敬重。深嫉祖來。乃於王前。謂祖云。我與默論。不假言說。祖云。孰知勝負。云不爭勝負。但取其義。祖云。汝以何為義。云以無心為義。祖云。汝既無心。安得其義。云我說無心。當名非義。祖云。汝說無心。當名非義。我說非心。當義非名。云當義非名。誰能辯義。祖云。汝名非義。此名何名。云為辯非義。是名無名。祖云。名既非名。義亦非義。辯者是誰。當辯何物。如是往返五十九翻。外道杜口信伏。

> The mother dreamed of a divine sword. Upon awakening, she found herself pregnant. After giving birth, she encountered the Venerable Lion. Her past causes were clearly revealed, and the mind seal was secretly transmitted. She then traveled to southern India, where the king of central India, named King Jiasheng, offered her respect and support. There was a heretic known as "Selfless," who was highly favored by the king. Deeply jealous of the Patriarch's arrival, he said before the king, "I will debate with you silently, without relying on words." The Patriarch asked, "How will we determine the outcome?" The heretic replied, "We do not compete for victory or defeat; we simply seek the meaning." The Patriarch asked, "What do you consider meaning?" The heretic answered, "I take the state of no-mind as meaning." The Patriarch said, "Since you are without mind, how can there be meaning?" The heretic responded, "My saying 'no-mind' is itself the non-meaning." The Patriarch said, "You say 'no-mind' is non-meaning, but I say 'no-mind' is meaning, not name." The heretic asked, "If it is meaning and not name, who can discern the meaning?" The Patriarch replied, "You call it non-meaning. What name is this name?" The heretic said, "To discern non-meaning, this is called the nameless." The Patriarch concluded, "Since the name is not a name, meaning is also not meaning. Who is it that discerns, and what is it that is discerned?" In this manner, they exchanged fifty-nine rounds. The heretic fell silent, convinced, and submitted.

芭蕉云。譬如象馬𢤱戾難調。加諸楚毒。至于徹骨。方乃調伏　大陽延云。蚌鷸相持。死在漁人之手　妙喜云。尊者何用繁詞。待他道請師默論。不假言說。便云。義墮了也。

> Bashō said: "Just like an elephant or a horse that is stubborn and hard to control—it takes harsh measures, even to the point of pain reaching the bone, before it can be tamed." Dayang Yan said: "When the clam and the crane are locked in a standoff, they both meet their end at the hands of the fisherman." Miaoxi said: "Venerable one, why such a torrent of words? When he says, 'Please, Master, let us discuss in silence, without relying on words,' then say, 'The meaning has fallen away.'"

祖因南天竺國太子。不如密多。投祖出家。祖云。汝求出家。當為何事。云我求出家。當為佛事。祖嘆云。太子智慧天至。必諸聖降跡。即垂納受。削髮具戒。

> The Patriarch, originally a prince of the Southern Indian kingdom, came to seek ordination under the Master. The Master asked, "If you wish to leave home and become a monk, what is your purpose?" The prince replied, "I wish to leave home to serve the cause of Buddhahood." The Master sighed and said, "A prince with such innate wisdom must be the manifestation of a holy being." He then accepted him and had his head shaved, bestowing upon him the full precepts.

付法眼藏。而說偈云。聖人說知見。當境無非是。我今悟真性。無道亦無理。

> The Dharma Eye Treasury was transmitted, and a verse was spoken: The sages speak of knowledge and insight— In the present moment, nothing is not so. I now awaken to the true nature— No path, no principle either.
