### 二十六祖不如密多尊者凡一

> Venerable Simha Bhikshu, the Twenty-Sixth Patriarch<note>Chapter 1</note>

捨太子位。傳法度生。至東印度。有婆羅門子。街巷游行。初無定止。祖問之云。汝行何速。云師行何緩。祖云。汝今何姓。云與師同姓。祖云。汝憶往事否。云我念遠劫。與師同居。祖云。共為何事。云師演摩訶般若。我轉甚深修多羅。祖云。今日所談。深契宿因。汝乃大勢至菩薩也。即度出家。名般若多羅。

> Renouncing his prince's throne, he spread the Dharma to deliver sentient beings. When he arrived in Eastern India, there was a Brahmin's son wandering through the streets, seeming to have no fixed abode. The Patriarch asked him, "Why do you walk so quickly?" The young man replied, "Why does the Master walk so slowly?" The Patriarch asked, "What is your surname now?" The young man said, "I share the same surname as the Master." The Patriarch asked, "Do you recall past events?" The young man answered, "I remember that in distant eons, I lived together with the Master." The Patriarch asked, "What did we do together?" The young man replied, "The Master expounded the Great Prajñā, while I recited the profound sutras." The Patriarch said, "What we have discussed today truly resonates with our past karmic bonds. You are the bodhisattva Mahāsthāmaprāpta." He then ordained him as a monk, giving him the name Prajñātāra.

後付法眼。而說偈云。真性心地藏。無頭亦無尾。應緣而化物。方便呼為智。

> Then the Dharma Eye was transmitted, and he spoke this verse: The true nature dwells in the mind-ground, Without beginning and without end. It responds to conditions to transform beings, And is conveniently called wisdom.
