> Venerable Prajñādhāra, the Twenty-Seventh Patriarch<note>Two parts</note>

> Having attained the Dharma, he journeyed to Southern India. King Xiangzhi of that land was a devout follower of the Buddha's teachings, offering great respect and generosity. He presented the Patriarch with a priceless jewel. The King had three sons, and the Patriarch, holding the jewel he had received, asked the three princes, "This jewel is round and luminous—can anyone match its brilliance?" The first and second princes both replied, "This jewel is the foremost among all treasures; surely nothing can surpass it." But the third prince, Bodhidharma, said, "This is a worldly treasure, not the highest. Among all treasures, the treasure of the Dharma is supreme. This is worldly light, not the highest. Among all lights, the light of wisdom is supreme. This is worldly brightness, not the highest. Among all brightness, the brightness of the mind is supreme. This jewel's light cannot illuminate itself—it depends on the light of wisdom to discern it. Once discerned, one knows it is a jewel. Once known as a jewel, one understands its preciousness. But if one understands its preciousness, the preciousness is not inherent in the jewel itself. If one discerns the jewel, the jewel is not inherently a jewel—it depends on the wisdom-jewel to discern the worldly jewel. The preciousness is not self-inherent; it depends on the wisdom-treasure to illuminate the Dharma-treasure. Thus, when a teacher possesses the Way, the treasure naturally reveals itself. When sentient beings possess the Way, the mind-jewel is the same." The Patriarch praised his eloquence and wisdom, saying no one could surpass him.

> The Patriarch asked again, "Among all things, what is without form?" The monk replied, "Among all things, the absence of form arises from not clinging to form." The Patriarch said, "Among all things, what is the highest?" He replied, "Among all things, the sense of self is the highest." The Patriarch said, "Among all things, what is the greatest?" He replied, "Among all things, the nature of reality is the greatest." The Patriarch, recognizing him as a worthy vessel for the Dharma, then accepted him into the monastic community and gave him the full precepts.

> Now transmitting the Treasury of the True Dharma Eye, I speak this verse: From the ground of mind, all seeds arise; By conditions, they grow and reach the true principle. When fruits mature, Bodhi is complete; When flowers bloom, worlds come into being.

> Miao Xi said, "You have explained the principles well. Take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha."
