### 三祖僧璨大師凡二

> Third Ancestor, Great Master Sengcan

因沙彌道信來。作禮云。願和尚乞與解脫法門。師云。誰縛汝。云無人縛。師云。何更求解脫乎。信於言下大悟。服勤九載。

> A novice monk named Daoxin came and bowed, saying, "Master, I beg you to grant me the method of liberation." The master said, "Who binds you?" Daoxin replied, "No one binds me." The master said, "Then why seek liberation any further?" At these words, Daoxin was greatly awakened. He served diligently for nine years.

後付法眼。而說偈云。花種雖因地。從地種花生。若無人下種。花地盡無生。

> He then transmitted the Dharma Eye, saying this verse: Though flower seeds rely on the ground, From the ground, seeds give rise to flowers. If no one plants the seed below, The ground and flowers both cease to grow.

師於隋煬帝。大業二年丙寅。十月十五日。為四眾。宣演法要訖。於大樹下。合掌立終。塔于本山。

> The Master, during the reign of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty, in the second year of the Daye era (606 CE), on the fifteenth day of the tenth month, concluded his teachings for the fourfold assembly. Then, beneath a great tree, he stood with palms joined and passed away. A stupa was erected on the mountain where he had dwelt.
