### 四祖道信禪師凡一

> Fourth Patriarch Zen Master Daoxin

河內司馬氏子也。師問三祖。如何是古佛心。祖云。汝今是甚麼心。師云。我今無心。祖云。汝既無心。諸佛豈有耶。師言下。頓息疑情。

> A native of the Sima family in Hanoi. The master asked the Third Patriarch, "What is the mind of the ancient Buddhas?" The Patriarch replied, "What is your mind right now?" The master said, "I am without mind at this moment." The Patriarch said, "Since you are without mind, how could the Buddhas have one?" At these words, the master's doubts were instantly dispelled.

自茲攝心無𥧌。脇不至席者。六十年。

> From that moment on, he focused his mind without rest and never let his body recline—not even to sit—for sixty years.

一日於蘄州黃梅縣。逢一童子。骨相奇秀。異乎常童。師問之云。子何姓。云姓即有。不是常姓。師云。是何姓。云是佛性。師云。汝無姓耶。云姓空故。師默器之。即受出家落髮。俾令給侍。

> One day in Qizhou, Huangmei County, he met a young boy with an extraordinary appearance, unlike any ordinary child. The Master asked him, "What is your surname?" The boy replied, "I have a surname, but it is not the usual kind." The Master asked, "What sort of surname is it?" The boy answered, "It is Buddha-nature." The Master said, "So you have no surname?" The boy replied, "Because emptiness is my nature." The Master silently recognized the boy's potential, accepted him into monastic life, shaved his head, and had him serve as an attendant.

後付法眼。而說偈云。花種有生地。因地花生生。大緣與信合。當生生不生。

> Transmitting the Dharma Eye to his successor, he spoke this verse: Seeds of flowers have a place to grow; From causes, flowers bloom unseen. The great conditions unite with faith; In birth, no birth, ever serene.

師於高宗永徽辛亥歲。九月四日。安坐示寂。壽七十二。塔于本山。

> The Master, in the year of Xinhai during the Yonghui reign of Emperor Gaozong, on the fourth day of the ninth month, sat in meditation and passed away peacefully. He was seventy-two years old. A stupa was erected for him on this very mountain.
