### 五祖弘忍大師凡一

> Fifth Patriarch Hongren

蘄州黃梅人。無父。從母姓周氏。得法之後。居破頭山。有居士盧惠能。來參。師問。汝自何來。云嶺南。師云。欲求何事。云唯求作佛。師云。嶺南人無佛性。若為得佛。云人有南北。佛性豈然。祖默異之。乃呵云。著槽廠去。能入碓坊。腰石舂米。供眾。

> In Qizhou, there was a man from Huangmei. His father had passed away, and he took his mother's surname, Zhou. After attaining the Dharma, he resided at Potou Mountain. A lay practitioner named Lu Huineng came to pay him a visit. The master asked, "Where have you come from?" Huineng replied, "From Lingnan." The master asked, "What is it that you seek?" Huineng answered, "I only seek to become a Buddha." The master said, "People from Lingnan have no Buddha-nature. How could you possibly become a Buddha?" Huineng responded, "People may have differences between north and south, but how could Buddha-nature be any different?" The master was silently impressed by this. Yet he scolded him, saying, "Go work in the rice mill." Huineng went to the mill, where he used a stone tied to his waist to pound rice for the community.

師將付法。命門人呈偈。見性者付焉。有上首神秀大師。作一偈。書于廊壁間云。身是菩提樹。心如明鏡臺。時時勤拂拭。莫遣惹塵埃。師嘆云。若依此修行。亦得勝果。眾皆誦之。能聞。乃問云。誦者是何章句。同學具述其事。能云。美則美矣。了則未了。同學呵云。庸流何知。發此狂言。能云。若不信。願以一偈和之。同學相顧而笑。能至深夜。自執燭。倩一童子。於秀偈之側。書一偈云。菩提本無樹。明鏡亦非臺。本來無一物。何處惹塵埃。師知是能作。心已默之。乃謂眾云。此偈亦未見性。

> The master was about to pass on the Dharma and asked his disciples to present verses, saying that only one who had seen his true nature would receive it. The senior disciple, Shenxiu, composed a verse and wrote it on the corridor wall: The body is the Bodhi tree, The mind is like a clear mirror stand. Always wipe it diligently, Do not let it gather dust. The master sighed and said, "If one cultivates according to this, one may still attain a good result." Everyone recited this verse. Huineng heard it and asked, "What verse is this being recited?" His fellow students explained what had happened. Huineng said, "It's beautiful, but not yet fully enlightened." His fellow students scolded him, saying, "What would an ordinary fellow like you know? How dare you speak such wild words!" Huineng replied, "If you don't believe me, I would like to offer a verse in response." The students exchanged glances and laughed. Late that night, Huineng held a candle and asked a young boy to write a verse beside Shenxiu's: The Bodhi tree is originally nothing, The clear mirror is also not a stand. Originally there is not a single thing, Where could dust gather? The master knew Huineng had written it and silently approved in his heart. But he said to the assembly, "This verse has not yet seen the true nature either."

深夜潛召能入室。囑之云。吾以無上微妙正法。并所傳袈裟。用付於汝。善自護持。傳付將來。無令斷絕。聽吾偈云。有情來下種。因地果還生。無情既無種。無性亦無生。能跪受衣法云。法既受已。衣付何人。師云。達磨初來。人未之信。故傳衣以明得法之實。今信心已熟。衣乃諍端。止於汝身。不復傳也。

> Late that night, Huineng was secretly summoned into the abbot's chamber. The Fifth Patriarch instructed him, saying, "I now entrust to you the supreme and subtle true Dharma, along with the robe that has been passed down. Treasure and guard them well, and pass them on to future generations so that the lineage may never be cut off. Listen to my verse: Sentient beings sow the seeds, From the ground of conditions, fruits arise. When there is no sentience, no seeds are sown, And without nature, nothing is born. Huineng knelt and received the robe and Dharma, then asked, "Since I have now received the Dharma, to whom should the robe be passed?" The Fifth Patriarch replied, "When Bodhidharma first came to this land, people had not yet come to believe in him, so the robe was passed down to demonstrate the truth of having attained the Dharma. Now that faith has matured, the robe has become a source of contention. Let it stop with you — it shall not be passed on further."

師付法後又四載。上元二年。告眾云。吾今事畢。時可行矣。遂安坐而寂。俗壽七十有四。塔于黃梅之東山。

> After the Master had transmitted the Dharma, four more years passed. In the second year of the Shangyuan era, he said to the assembly, "My work here is now complete. The time has come for me to depart." Then, sitting peacefully, he passed away. He had lived for seventy-four years. His stupa was erected at East Mountain in Huangmei.
