The Treatise on the Transcendence of Views is a Buddhist Chan text attributed to Bodhidharma, traditionally regarded as the work of the First Patriarch of Chan, though scholarly consensus dates its composition to the mid-to-late Tang dynasty, reflecting early Chan thought. Structured in a dialogue format, the treatise expounds the principle of "transcending views," advocating the surpassing of dualistic distinctions and directly pointing to the nature of mind. It emphasizes the sudden enlightenment concept of "no-mind is the Way," forming, together with the "Treatise on the Two Entrances and Four Practices," the foundational core of Chan doctrine. Integrating the prajñā view of emptiness with tathāgatagarbha thought, it presents the practice of "neither grasping nor rejecting," exerting a profound influence on later Southern Chan. As a significant Chan text, the Treatise on the Transcendence of Views embodies the pivotal transition of Chinese Chan from Indian meditation traditions to a localized expression, holding a distinctive place in the history of Buddhist thought and Chan literature.

Gateway to the Principles of Conditionality, One Volume.

The first part is the question, rooted in conditional circumstances and seeking understanding. The second part is the answer, guiding us into the truth to dissolve doubt.

This is called the Treatise on Cutting Off All Views.

The great Path to Cessation is empty and still, subtle and silent. It cannot be grasped with the thinking mind, nor explained in words. So now let us imagine two people discussing the truth together. The teacher is named Entering Principle, and the student is named Gate of Conditions.

Then Mr. Ruli fell silent and said nothing. Yuanmen suddenly rose and asked Mr. Ruli, "What is called the mind, and how does one settle the mind?"

They replied: You don't need to set up your mind, nor do you need to force it to settle. That is precisely peace.

二

Second.

Question: If there is no mind, how can one learn the Path?

The answer is: the Path to Cessation is not a matter of the mind’s thoughts—how could it be found in the mind?

三

Three

Question: If it is not the mind that thinks, then what should one use to think?

They answered: Having thoughts means having a mind, and having a mind goes against the Path to Cessation. Having no thoughts means having no mind, and having no mind is the true Path to Cessation.

Question: Do all sentient beings truly have a mind?

He replied: If sentient beings truly had a mind, that would already be delusion. It is only because they insist on creating a mind where there is no mind that false thoughts arise.

五

Five

A questioner asks: If there is no mind, then what exists?

He replied: When there is no mind, there are no things. When there are no things, there is natural purity. Natural purity is the great Path to Cessation.

六

Six

Question: How can the deluded thoughts of sentient beings be brought to an end?

He replied: If you perceive deluded thoughts, or perceive their cessation, you are still not free from deluded thoughts.

七

Seven

Question: If one does not set aside the Cessation of Suffering, can one still be in accord with reason?

He replied: Whether you say it fits or doesn't fit, either way you're still caught up in deluded thinking.

八

Eight

Question: What is the right time?

They replied, "No, it is not that."
