### 裴相國為于闐國王子

> Prime Minister Pei for the Prince of Khotan

北夢瑣言曰。唐丞相裴休留心釋宗。精於禪教。圭峰密公凡所著述。裴悉製序。常著毳衲。於歌妓院持鉢乞食。自言。不為俗情所染。可以說法度人。每發願。世世為國王。弘護佛法。後于闐國王生一太子。手紋有裴休二字。聞于中朝。裴之子通書欲奉迎。不允乃止。

> From the \*Bei Meng Suo Yan\* (Casual Talks of the Northern Dream), it is recorded: In the Tang dynasty, Prime Minister Pei Xiu was deeply devoted to the study of Buddhism, particularly the Zen school. Whenever Master Guifeng (Zongmi) wrote a treatise, Pei Xiu would write the preface. He often wore a coarse woolen robe and, carrying a bowl, would go to places of singing and dancing to beg for food. He said of himself: "I am not stained by worldly passions, and thus I can teach and liberate others." He made a vow that in every lifetime, he would be born as a king to promote and protect the Buddha's teachings. Later, a prince was born to the king of Khotan, and on his palm were the characters "Pei Xiu." When this news reached the central court of China, Pei Xiu's son wrote a letter expressing his desire to welcome the prince, but the request was not granted, and so the matter was dropped.
