> This explains the merit of the Ten Wholesome Deeds. The Ten Wholesome Deeds and the Ten Unwholesome Deeds are essentially the same; they just take different names depending on whether they follow the conditions of purity or defilement. It's like a fist opening into a palm—one body has two functions, depending on whether one clenches or opens. Opening is the Ten Unwholesome Deeds; clenching is the Ten Wholesome Deeds. What are the Ten Unwholesome Deeds? They consist of three physical actions, four verbal actions, and three mental actions. The three physical unwholesome deeds are: killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. The four verbal unwholesome deeds are: lying, frivolous speech, divisive speech, and harsh speech. The three mental unwholesome deeds are: greed, anger, and ignorance. Stopping these ten unwholesome deeds and not engaging in them is called the path of the Ten Wholesome Deeds. The Five Precepts are the foundation, and the Ten Wholesome Deeds are their expression. For example, every person has a body that must use limbs. Without limbs, what action can the body take? Without a body, where would the limbs be placed? Limbs rely on the body to perform countless functions and create the whole world. This truth is clear and beyond doubt. Students must take the Five Precepts as their foundation and the Ten Wholesome Deeds as their expression. Only by practicing both the foundation and its expression can they accomplish the work of Buddhahood. If people throughout the world sincerely uphold the Five Precepts and diligently cultivate the Ten Wholesome Deeds, each attending to their own livelihood and managing their affairs responsibly, restraining themselves, being economical, and supporting their parents with filial devotion, this will naturally move the gods and the eight kinds of protective beings to descend upon this world to guard and protect it. The winds and rains will come in due season, grains will flourish, the world will be at peace, and all people will enjoy their work. With such wholesome benefits, we dedicate them in prayer for our present wise and holy sovereign ruler. May he take the entire world as his family and all people as his children; may the imperial authority be greatly revived, and all nations come to pay tribute; may his virtuous reputation spread far and wide, and the ten directions submit in obedience. Without need for harsh punishments, may he effortlessly achieve peace and prosperity. May his blessings and longevity be boundless, and the land united under one rule. May the royal branches flourish and the royal leaves bloom together, forever spreading the peaceful governance of Yao and forever shining the radiance of Shun.
