曇無德尊者天竺國人也此云法正或云曇摩毱多此翻法鏡又翻法藏亦云法密尊者采菽氏之裔體毘履之支通達理味含藏正法大集經云我涅槃後我諸弟子受持十二部經書寫誦讀顛倒宣說故隱覆法藏言隱覆者即密義也法名四分乃毱多祖之弟子述義云葢佛滅度後百年之中西土傳法者皆具禪法律三藏因尊者鄔波毱多弟子五人各宗其見開張毘尼分為五部宗者殊難自後傳法惟授禪宗及與經論也從是以後律燈漸晦慧命懸𮈔至盛唐宣祖撰行事鈔建南山宗遙依四分宗主為始祖
