> Chapter 26: The Dharani of the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma At that time, the Bodhisattva Medicine King (Bhaisajyaraja), rising from his seat, bared his right shoulder, pressed his palms together, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, how many good men or good women will there be who uphold this Lotus Sutra?" The Buddha replied to Medicine King Bodhisattva: "Medicine King, if there are good men or good women who offer alms to Buddhas as numerous as the sands of eight hundred ten thousand myriads of koṭis of Ganges rivers, how much more so for those who uphold this Sutra." Medicine King Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, I shall now speak protective mantras (dharanis) for those who preach the Dharma. Then he spoke this mantra: Ani, Mane, Mane, Mane, Mane, Maneti, Manamati, Manamati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati, Manasvati. "World-Honored One, these dharanis are proclaimed by Buddhas as numerous as the sands of sixty-two koṭis of Ganges rivers. If any monks or nuns, laymen or laywomen, who uphold this Sutra, are harassed by demons, ghosts, or spirits, those who recite these dharanis will be protected." Then Medicine King Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, I shall again speak protective mantras for those who uphold the Dharma." Then he spoke this mantra: Diladi, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley, Diley. "World-Honored One, even if those who have mastered these dharanis go among the four assemblies, they will be protected. They will not be disturbed by demons, nor by kings or princes, nor by the powerful, nor by bandits, nor by armies, nor by tigers, wolves, lions, or poisonous insects. They will be safe. "World-Honored One, if a person hears these dharanis, they will know that they have received the blessings of their past good deeds." At that time, the Bodhisattva Rescuing All Living Beings and Embracing the Multitude (Sarvajñatākāra) rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, pressed his palms together, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, I too shall speak protective mantras to help those who uphold the Dharma." Then he spoke this mantra: Benomati, Benomati, Benomati, Benomati, Benomati, Benomati, Benomati. "World-Honored One, these dharanis are spoken by Buddhas as numerous as the sands of eight koṭis of Ganges rivers. Those who uphold this Sutra and recite these dharanis will be protected." Then the Bodhisattva Brahma King (Brahmapati) said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, I too shall speak a protective mantra for those who uphold the Dharma." Then he spoke this mantra: Gandhari, Gandhari, Gandhari, Gandhari, Gandhari, Gandhari, Gandhari, Gandhari, Gandhari. The Four Heavenly Kings (Caturmahārājakāyikāḥ) then said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, let all beings who uphold this Sutra be free from harm. We shall protect them and their followers with these dharanis." Then they spoke this mantra: Kili, Kili, Kili, Kili, Kili, Kili, Kili. The Buddha then addressed the great assembly: "If a person hears these dharanis, he will see that his past deeds have ripened. Even if he plants good roots with Buddhas as numerous as the sands of six koṭis of Ganges rivers, he can uphold this Sutra. The Buddhas will protect him, and he will be free from fear of calamities and dangers." Then the World-Honored One, wishing to clarify this meaning, spoke verses (gāthās): "Those who hear and uphold this Sutra Will be free from fear and harm. Demons will not trouble them, Nor kings, nor armies, nor the powerful. "Those who uphold this Sutra Will be protected by the Buddhas. The kings of the heavens will guard them, And their peace will never be disturbed." Thus concludes the Dharani Chapter of the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma.

> Dhāraṇī. In the Jin translation, it is called "total retention." The Great Treatise says: it can retain and gather all kinds of wholesome dharmas, preventing them from being lost. The previous three chapters clearly teach the practice of upholding this sutra. Up to the universal gate of freedom, it is the cause encompassing the sea of results. The following three chapters clearly teach the secret practice of upholding this sutra. The "explicit" refers to the Wonderful Adornment King, while the "secret" refers to this chapter and Samantabhadra's exhortation. This is the result penetrating to the source of the cause. Both cause and result are one true mind—this is the meaning of total retention.

> At that time, the Bodhisattva Medicine King rose from his seat. <note>Until</note> the merit of cultivating spiritual practice as taught is immense.

> At that time, after previously comparing the merits of those who uphold the scripture, this further inquiry serves as the beginning of the aspiration to expound the mantra. According to the chapter on the Merits of Rejoicing, in their next life, they will be born in the same place as Bodhisattvas who possess the Dharani. In this chapter, Medicine King, Courageous Giver, Vaishravana, the Heavenly King Who Protects the Country, the Ten Rakshasa Maidens, and the Mother of Ghosts are all Bodhisattvas who can bestow the Dharani upon those who uphold the scripture.

> At that time, the Bodhisattva Medicine King said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One," and then spoke this mantra:

> Peace<note>One</note> Tranquility<note>Two</note><note>To</note> The Unborn, Unconditioned, and Boundless<note>Forty-six</note>

> The World-Honored One is the Dharani sacred mantra, which benefits all sentient beings.

> The World-Honored One then addressed the assembly. The first recipient of the Buddha's reply realized that those who uphold this sutra would gain immense blessings. Fearing that the envious might attack slanderers from the front or back, he therefore shared the divine mantra he had received from the sixty-two billion Ganges-sand Buddhas he had personally approached, bestowing it upon upholders of the sutra for their protection. This was done both out of compassion for those who would uphold the sutra in later ages, and to demonstrate the vast number of Buddhas he had himself encountered.

> At that time, the Bodhisattva Brave Giving said to the Buddha, "Thus," and then, before the Buddha, he spoke this mantra:
