The Chapter on the Ultimate Meaning in the Lotus Sutra was composed by the eminent Tang dynasty monk Kuiji, serving as one of the significant commentaries of the Faxiang (Consciousness-Only) school. As a direct disciple of the great master Xuanzang, Kuiji inherited and further developed the philosophy of Consciousness-Only. This work provides a profound exposition on the core teachings of the Lotus Sutra, with particular focus on the doctrinal system of the One Vehicle as the ultimate truth and the Three Vehicles as skillful means. It emphasizes the perfectly complete principle that all sentient beings can attain Buddhahood. This commentary holds a lofty position in the history of Chinese Buddhism, constituting an important text for studying the integration of Lotus Sutra thought and Consciousness-Only philosophy. It has also exerted a profound influence on the subsequent development of doctrines in schools such as the Tiantai and Huayan traditions.
