> Record of Master Yun'an's Teachings at Dazheng Puzhao Zen Temple in Zhenjiang

> Editor: Yuanjing

> On the eighth day of the third month in the second year of the Kaixi era, Master accepted the invitation to enter Baohua Mountain Temple in Pingjiang Prefecture.

> The Sizhou Hall appears in Yangzhou. Seated firmly at Mount Shou, but not even touching the ground— What one gains is a body full of sorrow. It is not fate that brings enemies together, but karma.

> Abbot, the sun-face and the moon-face— a thunderbolt and a flash of lightning! It comes straight down— look quickly, with all your eyes!

> Pick up the petition; The horse's head turns back. The ox's head sinks low. Once a single word enters the government gate, Nine oxen cannot drag it out.

> Picking up the robe. This kind of external form transforms in countless ways, Yet its story from Mount Huangmei and Vulture Peak spreads freely through the ages. Later generations, whether noble or humble, still cherish it.

> Ascending the Dharma Seat, yet not dwelling in it; dwelling, yet not being seated. Water freezes into ice; wind fans the flames. Ascending the seat, lighting incense, and offering blessings for the emperor. Next, lighting incense and saying: "This incense is both laughable and pitiful. To whom can I pour out my sorrow? At Mount Yefu, I once lost my footing—a weight of a thousand pounds reduced to a single hair. I offer it all to my late teacher, the Great Abbot Songyuan, formerly of Jingde Lingyin Chan Temple in Lin'an, to repay the kindness of his Dharma milk." Then \[he\] took his seat. The venerable Ganlu Nuo'an Zhao struck the gavel and said, "To the assembly of dragon-elephants of the Dharma: You should now observe the First Principle." The teacher said, "Before the drum was struck, before I ascended this seat, there was already a perfect ancient Buddha configuration. Is there anyone who recognizes the signs and adapts accordingly?" A monk asked, "When one carries a staff horizontally, striding boldly into the tiger's den and the demon's palace—when gripping a razor-sharp sword directly, slaying buddhas and patriarchs—what is that very moment like?" The teacher said, "Cliffs crumble; rocks split open." The monk pressed on, "Today, a minor effort has brought a major encounter." The teacher said, "Luring a thief only to ruin your own home." The monk asked, "Whose song does the master sing? Whose tradition do you inherit?" The teacher said, "The donkey business isn't over; horse affairs arrive." The monk asked, "Could this be the authentic lineage of Songyuan and the true transmission of Dongshan?" The teacher said, "From here to the Western Heavens is a hundred thousand miles." The monk asked, "Is there anything further beyond?" The teacher said, "First east, then north—hands folded across the chest." The monk said, "I don't understand." The teacher said, "In Jiangxi, Great Master Ma; in Nanyue, the Venerable Rang." The monk bowed. The teacher said, "Today's encounter is a loss." Then he said: "Heaven's vault splits open; all phenomena collapse. Shouting down the white clouds, the ancient alone shines through. Full manifestation of the spirit—no lingering hesitation. Sparks fly, stars scatter; raising your eyes, you see ten thousand miles. Trace back their direction: origins arise from elsewhere. Wondrously turning, endlessly—how exquisite a model! All the buddhas of the three times and the six patriarchs could only blink. When you reach this point, you cannot push forward, nor pull back. Within the world or beyond it, who sustains your power? Do you fully understand? Though peace and celebration fill ten thousand nations under the wise sovereign, Once again we see the Yellow River turn clear."

> Another case: The King of Min invited Luoshan to ascend the hall. Luoshan gathered his robe, looked over the assembly, and then descended from his seat. The king approached and, taking Luoshan's hand, said, "The assembly on Vulture Peak—how is it different from today?" Luoshan replied, "I thought you were just an ordinary layman." The Master commented: "A dragon soars, a tiger leaps—jade turning, pearls spinning. It shatters past and present, like white jade without a flaw. Still, though it brings peace without effort, it cannot completely cut off the roots. (He strikes the whisk.) To forge a knife, you need steel from Jing province. (He strikes the gavel.) Contemplate the Dharma King's Dharma: the Dharma King's Dharma is thus."

> That evening during informal instruction, the teacher said: "You monastic practitioners are like dragons and tigers—swift as wind and sudden as storms. Who can do anything to you? Sometimes you pick up a single blade of grass and transform it into a sixteen-foot golden body; sometimes you blow on a single strand of wool and transmit the true Dharma eye. You transcend the four propositions and go beyond the hundred negations. Pure and clear, bright and spotless, you directly penetrate ten thousand barriers, not lingering beyond the azure vault. Even the thousand-armed Guanyin cannot lift you; the blazing vajra eye cannot glimpse you. When you raise a single pivot or reveal a single realm, mountains collapse and rivers flow backward. You serve as the ladder and boat for the buddhas and patriarchs, the model for gods and humans. Now that I have announced this, is there anyone who can examine it?" He struck the ground with his staff and said: "A four-horse chariot cannot catch up with one's words." He then brought up the old case where Master Langya asked Master Fahua, "Where have you come from recently?" The teacher commented: "Everyone says that Langya was defeated by Fahua's strategy. Who would realize that Fahua was actually seen through by Langya? Despite this, you must know: 'When profit is seen, righteousness is forgotten.' Therefore, the way of the noble person has become rare."

> The wind and clouds converge, dragons and tigers charge and retreat in turns, each following its due course. The monastery thrives brightly, the wisdom life radiates brilliance. How thick is the face of the old master? Only those who have penetrated the truth can know.

> The Master addressed the assembly: "In the days since I arrived at this monastery, worldly affairs have been noisy and chaotic—my feet have been running around like smoke, and my eyes can't even see my own nostrils. If the Great Sage and the ancient teachers heard about this, they would say it is rare. Why is that? Such was the radiant sign of the Light of the Past Buddha itself."

> Returning to the Eastern Huai region, the master ascended the hall and said: "Coming back, going out— Kashyapa is poor, Ananda is rich. Going out, coming back— Southern India, Northern Mount Wutai. Wrapped up before your eyes, But your face is covered in dust. Where the Great Yu's efforts did not reach, The river's roar flows westward."

> The Master took the high seat and told this story: There is a famous verse about Lingyun becoming enlightened upon seeing peach blossoms. Xuansha commented: "That's correct, very correct. But I dare say you haven't truly penetrated it yet." The Master then said: "Two people in the same pit are not made of the same dirt — there is definitely still a gap between close and distant."

> Today

> The teacher ascended the hall and said: All past Tathāgatas have already perfected this gateway—shattered with a single blow. All present bodhisattvas now each enter perfect illumination—amidst wind and fire. All future practitioners should abide in this way—with tongue pressed to the palate. But to speak like this is to hand a ladder to the thief.
