Sixth Doubt
Question: "If an ordinary person bound by afflictions is reborn in that Land, yet their wrong views and the three poisons continue to arise, how can they attain birth in that Land and immediately reach the stage of non-retrogression, surpassing the three realms?"
A commentary explains: "Those who are reborn in that land achieve the state of non-retrogression for five reasons. What are these five?
First, they are upheld by Amitabha Buddha's great compassionate vow-power, and thus do not fall back.
Second, the Buddha's light constantly shines upon them, so their aspiration for enlightenment continuously grows and does not regress.
Third, the water, birds, trees, the sound of the wind, and the music—all proclaim the truths of suffering and emptiness. Those who hear them constantly give rise to thoughts of mindfulness of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, and thus do not regress.
Fourth, that land is filled exclusively with great bodhisattvas as good companions. There are no evil conditions or circumstances. Externally, there are no spirits, ghosts, or demonic influences; internally, there are no three poisons like greed, anger, or ignorance. Afflictions ultimately do not arise, and thus they do not regress.
Fifth, once born in that land, one's life span extends for countless eons, equal to the Buddha and the bodhisattvas, and thus they do not regress.
In this evil world, our days and months are brief. If, over countless eons, one can again avoid giving rise to afflictions and cultivate the path for a long time, how could one fail to attain the patient endurance of the non-arising of dharmas? This principle is clear—there is no need for doubt."
