At that time, Vajrapani addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, if there are good men and good women who enter this great compassion treasury and abide in the samaya of the great mandala king, how much merit will they accumulate?"
Having said this, the Buddha addressed Vajrapāṇi, saying: "O Secret Keeper! From the moment of first arousing the mind of enlightenment until the attainment of Buddhahood, the accumulation of merit and virtue of that good man or good woman is equal to that of the Tathāgata. O Secret Keeper! You should understand this teaching thus: that good man or good woman is born from the mouth of the Tathāgata, a child of the Buddha's heart. Wherever such a good man or good woman resides, there the Buddha is present, performing the Buddha's work. Therefore, O Secret Keeper! If you wish to make offerings to the Buddha, you should make offerings to this good man or good woman. If you wish to see the Buddha, you should look upon one who can crush the armies of Māra and bring benefit and happiness to all beings. Therefore, if you wish to attain the true Wisdom of all Tathāgatas, you should single-mindedly cultivate this Dharma, for it can swiftly accomplish All-Knowing Wisdom."(The Lotus Sutra states, 'With a pure mind, revere and respect the Buddha'; the Vimalakīrti Sutra states, 'Born from immeasurable merit and wisdom.')
Bless this five-colored cord and tie it around your left arm. The mantra is:
I take refuge in the Great Sage Vairocana Tathagata of the Vajra Realm. I take refuge in Akshobhya Tathagata of the East. I take refuge in Ratnasambhava Tathagata of the South. I take refuge in Amitabha Tathagata, King of Contemplative Freedom, of the West. I take refuge in Amoghasiddhi Tathagata of the North.
Homage to Samantabhadra Vajrasattva and all Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, as numerous as the dust motes in all worlds throughout the boundless, infinite universe, interwoven like an endless net across past, present, and future.
Again, with a focused mind, recite this mantra to protect all disciples. The mantra is:
