The "Record of the Four Masters of Huanglong" was prefaced by the Song dynasty monk Qian Mi and contains the recorded sayings of four eminent monks: Huinan, the founder of the Huanglong branch of the Linji school, along with his dharma heirs Huanglong Zuxin, Donglin Changzong, and Baofeng Kewen. Compiled during the Southern Song period, this work systematically organizes the Chan teachings and the sharp, instructive dialogues of the Huanglong lineage, serving as a core text for studying the Chan style and transmission of the Huanglong branch of the Linji school in the Song dynasty. It is not only a vital historical source for understanding the development and evolution of the Linji school during the Song, but also exerted a profound influence on later Chan Buddhism, particularly in Japan, holding a prominent place in the history of Buddhist thought and recorded sayings literature.
