> Master Foyin's Essay on Abstaining from Killing

鱗甲羽毛諸品類眾生與佛心無二只為當初錯用心致使今生頭角異水中游林裏戲何忍將來充日計須臾活捉在砧床口不能言眼還󳬇或搥𭢕或刀刺牽入鑊湯深可畏推毛捋羽刮皮鱗剖脊剜心猶吐氣美君喉誇好味勸子勸妻同噉嗜只如恣性縱無明不懼陰司毫髮記命纔終冤業至面對閻王爭敢諱從頭一一報無差爐炭鑊湯何處避勸賢豪須戒忌莫把眾生當容易貪他一臠臠還他古聖留言終不偽戒殺念佛兼放生決到西方上品會。

> Scaly, feathered, shelled, and finned—all living beings Share the same Buddha-nature, no different from your own. Only because they once misdirected their minds Do they now appear with horns and heads so different. Some swim in waters, some play in forests— How can we bear to make them our daily fare? In a moment they are caught alive and thrown on the chopping block, Unable to speak, yet their eyes still show their terror. Beaten with mallets, pierced with knives, Dragged into boiling cauldrons—a sight too dreadful to behold. Feathers plucked, fur stroked, scales scraped from skin, Backs split, hearts cut out, they still gasp for breath. You praise their throats, delighting in their taste, Urging your sons and wives to feast with you. But indulging your cravings in reckless ignorance, You forget that the King of Hell records every slightest deed. When life comes to an end, your karmic debts will meet you— Face to face with King Yama, how dare you deny? Every single deed will be repaid without exception; Amid furnace coals and boiling cauldrons, where can you flee? So I urge you, noble ones: be cautious and refrain— Do not treat living beings as something trivial. For every bite of flesh you take, you'll owe a bite in turn; The ancient sages' words were never false. Abstain from killing, chant the Buddha's name, and free the captive— And you shall surely reach the West's Pure Land, in the highest assembly.
