### 浙翁佛心禪師

> Master Chan Master Zhe'weng Foxin

初到雙徑。見大慧之嗣仁公。扣以當時千七百眾咨決之要。得狗子無佛性話。默領去。過台之報恩。求決於佛照。夜參。聞舉世尊鞭影語曰。見鞭影而行。非良馬也。言下省悟。旦日入室。問。不思善。不思惡。正恁麼時。如何是琰上座本來面目。曰。佛手遮不得。復隨侍證老衲於番陽。聞旁僧商量雲門話墮話云。那裏是這僧話墮處。豁然洞見佛照從前機用。佛照每語人曰。我握拂柄以來。的契吾機者。惟琰爾。後佛照．佛心接武住凌霄。法席俱盛。如佛日猶在時也。佛心塔在㵎東。詳見誌銘。

> When he first arrived at the Twin Peaks monastery, he met Master Ren, the disciple of Dahui, and asked him about the essential teaching that the community of seven hundred had gathered to resolve. The Master gave him the \*gong-an\* "Does a dog have Buddha-nature?" and he silently took it to heart. Passing through Tai Prefecture at the Bao'en Monastery, he sought clarification from Fozhao. During the evening meditation, he heard the Master speak on the worldly honored one's saying about the whip's shadow: "A horse that moves only when it sees the whip's shadow is not a fine horse." At those words, he awakened. The next morning, entering the Master's room, he was asked: "Without thinking of good, without thinking of evil, right at this moment, what is your original face, Elder Yan?" He replied: "Even the Buddha's hand cannot conceal it." Later, he followed the Elder nun Zheng at Boyang. Hearing a monk discuss Yunmen's \*gong-an\* about "falling into speech," saying, "Where exactly did this monk fall into speech?" He suddenly saw through to Fozhao's entire technique of lively engagement. Fozhao often told others: "Since I took up the whisk, the only one who truly grasped my intention is Yan." Later, Fozhao and Foxin took turns residing at Lingxiao Monastery, where the Dharma assemblies flourished, just as in the time of Furi. The stupa of Foxin is located east of the stream.
