### 興化軍瑞香烈庵主

> Master Ruixiang Lie'an of Xinghua Army

本郡人。號幻住叟。妙年奇逸。飽叢林。久參等庵。後得東庵。發明心要。歸鄉居虎丘巖餘十年。有山居小詠。其一曰。客來詢秘密。幽鳥語聲喧。此意分明甚。何消我再言。嘉定間。郡守以東塔招之。不出。及移錫瑞香。得東庵訃。舉哀拈香云。向來信釆遊江外。業風吹到明州界。𡎺著聱頭老拙庵。驀遭毒手相殃害。猛虎出林不足威。蚖蛇當路未為恠。虗空激拶火星飛。流布叢林惡聲在。死中得活復歸來。冷地思量真尀耐。近聞筋斗已倒翻。且喜昇平吾道泰。炷香聊以表殷勤。償却拳頭竹篦債。大眾。只如佛照和尚既然與麼。且道只今是雪屈耶。是酬恩耶。說著雖非直半文。誰知却有通人愛。瑞香得處分明。確守其志。不肯應世。伽梨勃窣於水光林影中。想見其高風逸韻。令人意消。

> A man from this prefecture, known as the Old Man of Phantom Dwelling, was remarkably gifted in his youth. He immersed himself deeply in the monastic community, spending a long time studying under Master Deng'an. Later, he studied under Master Dong'an, who helped him realize the essence of the mind. He returned to his hometown and lived on Tiger Hill for over ten years, where he composed a poem titled "Mountain Dwelling: A Short Song." One verse reads: "A visitor asks about the secret, The hidden bird's song fills the air. This meaning is perfectly clear, Why should I say more?" During the Jiading era, the prefectural governor invited him to reside at East Pagoda, but he declined. Later, when he moved his monastery to Ruixiang, he received news of Master Dong'an's passing. He held a memorial service, offered incense, and said: "Once, I wandered freely beyond the rivers, The winds of karma blew me into the land of Mingzhou. I stumbled upon the old hermit's hut, And suddenly suffered a harmful blow. A fierce tiger emerging from the forest is not as frightening, A venomous snake blocking the path is no oddity. The void crushes, sparks fly, This wicked reputation spreads through the monasteries. Dying yet living, I returned, And in this cold stillness, I truly endured. Recently, I heard you've turned a somersault, And I'm delighted that our path is peaceful and flourishing. Burning this incense as a token of my sincerity, Repaying the debt of fist and bamboo staff. Everyone, since Master Fozhao has already acted thus, Tell me: is this an act of redress or gratitude? Saying so may be worth not even half a coin, Yet who knows, a perceptive person may cherish it." The Ruixiang lineage's realization was clear and precise. He steadfastly held to his principles, unwilling to engage with the world. Wearing his monastic robe, wandering in the light of water and shadows of trees, one can imagine his noble spirit and transcendent charm, which makes worldly concerns melt away.
