### 萬庵柔禪師

> Master Wan'an Rou Chan Master

示眾云。有句無句。如藤倚樹。荊棘林中開活路。樹倒藤枯。句歸何處。生鐵秤鎚被虫炷。泥盤放下笑呵呵。殺人劒與活人刀。若是金毛獅子子。三千里外見誵訛。佛生日。云。周行七步。已入邪路。目顧四方。開眼尿床。指天指地。有甚巴鼻。唯我獨尊。猶是兒孫。畢竟浴他。圖箇什麼。良久。云。珊瑚枕上千行泪。半是思君半恨君。閱此數語。履霜知氷。踐露知暑矣。密庵雖門戶嚴緊。而接人甚盛。豈有吞舟之鱗能漏網耶。

> The Master proclaimed to the assembly: "Having words or not having words is like a vine clinging to a tree. In the thicket of thorns, a living path opens. When the tree falls and the vine withers, where do the words return? An iron weighing hammer is eaten by insects. Putting down the clay basin, one laughs heartily. The sword that kills and the knife that brings life— If you are a golden-maned lion cub, you will see the entanglement from three thousand miles away." On the Buddha's birthday, he said: "Walking seven steps—already on the wrong path. Gazing in four directions—opening eyes to pee in bed. Pointing to heaven and earth—what foundation is there? 'Solely honored above all'—still a descendant. In the end, bathing him—what is one after? After a long pause, he said: 'A thousand lines of tears on a coral pillow— half longing for you, half resenting you.'" Reading these few words, one knows ice from treading frost, knows heat from stepping on dew. Though Master Mi'an's gate was strict, his reception of people was abundant. How could a fish that swallows boats ever slip through the net?
