### 芥堂璁禪師

> Master Jietang Cong

預木庵室。一日。侍次。忽逢其怒曰。你在此作什麼。夏制將滿。西來意作麼生會。纔擬答。被劈口打一掌。且厲聲曰。速道。速道。纔擬答。又被打一掌。忽省發汗下。禮謝而去。自此諸方號弘法道者莫不往參激。晚住吳門聖因。益馳聲譽。白髮垂肩。叢林呼為璁白頭云。

> In the Chan meditation hall, one day while attending to his teacher, the master suddenly became angry and demanded, "What are you doing here? The summer retreat is almost over—what is your understanding of the ‘meaning of Bodhidharma’s coming from the West’?" As soon as the monk began to answer, he was struck across the mouth. The master shouted, "Speak quickly! Speak quickly!" When he tried again to reply, he was struck once more. Suddenly, the monk awakened, sweating profusely. He bowed in gratitude and left. From then on, wherever there were renowned teachers of the Dharma, he would go to study with them. In his later years, he resided at Sacred Cause Temple in Wu Gate, where his reputation grew even more. With white hair hanging down his shoulders, the monastic community called him "Cong of the White Hair."
