### 愛堂妙湛禪師

> Master Chan Master Miaozhan of Aitang

依水庵於杭之淨慈。為水頭．淨頭。一日。於寺前舉扇化錢。忽然猛省。因忘縮臂。旁僧訶曰。獃子。扇上有錢了。通身汗出。掖歸白水庵而印可之。亦有頌示之云。一堆屎上一尊佛。放出毫光照天地。鑊湯爐炭裏生蓮。只因洗面摸著鼻。為肯堂首眾日。新福帥王公度遊山。與論契合。到福以黃檗招之。後赴吳門守趙公彥橚承天之請。方順寂。愛堂。安吉人。朴野絕文飾。間發語言如枯柴。人不及見。惜哉。

> Water Hut lived at Jingci Temple in Hangzhou, serving as a water-bearer and a cleaner. One day, while holding a fan in front of the temple to collect alms, he suddenly had a profound awakening. So absorbed was he that he forgot to lower his arm. Another monk scolded him, saying, "You fool! There's money on the fan now!" At that moment, sweat poured from his entire body. He was helped back to White Water Hut, where he received his teacher's recognition and confirmation of his enlightenment. His teacher also gave him a gatha: "On a heap of dung sits a Buddha, Emitting brilliant light filling heaven and earth. In boiling cauldrons and fiery furnaces, a lotus blooms— Simply because, while washing his face, he touched his nose." Later, when Enlightened Hall became the head monk, the newly appointed military governor of Fuzhou, Wang Gongdu, came on a mountain outing. Their discussion struck a deep chord of mutual understanding. Upon returning to Fuzhou, Governor Wang invited him to Huangbo Temple. Subsequently, Hut responded to the invitation of Prefect Zhao Yansuo of Wumen to head Cheng Tian Temple, just before his final nirvana. As for Loving Hall, he was from Anji. Plain and rustic, he had no use for ornamentation. His few spoken words were like dry firewood—so rare that people hardly ever encountered them. A pity.
