> Master Tan of Juzhou

> The Venerable Ziyun was a native of Jiading Prefecture. He left the gorge region and resided at Zhangxi Temple in Mingzhou. In his spare time, he composed a treatise elucidating the pivotal awakening encounters of the patriarchs and Buddhas, entitled \*The Great Luminous Treasury\*. His writing style was bold and expansive. It is a pity that he passed away before completing the work. Regarding his commentary on Chan Master Danxia, he wrote: "Cutting the grass before the hall, riding on the sacred monk’s neck, and burning the wooden Buddha when the weather turned cold — these three cases are presented together. How could anyone else have done this? Like the clouds over Mount Heng, they appear suddenly in full clarity, and yet they do not claim this as their own doing. However, there was one who, upon seeing this, trembled with fear and lost his composure — the monastery superintendent. Danxia casually let Nanyang’s attendant go, yet directly apprehended National Teacher Nanyang himself. As the saying goes, ‘When drawing a bow, draw the strongest one.’ This was his handiwork. Deeply pitying the chronic ailments of beings in the latter age, he modified the ancients’ proven prescriptions. To craft the great Dharma medicine, one should take it with the saliva of harmony (\*Yuanhe jin\*) and swallow it down. The blessing of peace can be attained forthwith." I once visited the elder Foxiu (Foxi Zhi), and happened upon this text. He remarked, "Learned practitioners should also apply this method — swallowing with the saliva of harmony." The Venerable Zhou (Ziyun) once wrote his own epitaph, which said in brief: "At first, I studied the \*Shurangama Sutra\*, the \*Perfect Enlightenment Sutra\*, and the \*Awakening of Faith\*. Then I abandoned these and studied under Che’an and Wan’an at Zhaojue Monastery in Chengdu, and under Wan’an at Baishui. I packed my bag and came south, following the great Dahui at Yuwang and Jingshan. Later, I met Wan’an at Donglin and Ying’an at Jiangshan. Through great hardship and difficulty, I finally fulfilled the aspirations of a lifetime." From this, we know how arduous his journey was. There is no record of his attaining it easily.
