### 二祖慧可大士

> Second Patriarch, Venerable Huike

武牢人也。生姬氏。自承委寄。繼闡玄風。博求法嗣。至北齊天平二年。有居士年四十餘。不言名氏。作禮曰。弟子身纏風恙。請和尚與懺罪。曰。將罪來。與汝懺。士良久曰。覔罪性了不可得。曰。與汝懺罪竟。宜依佛法僧住。士曰。今見和尚。已知是僧。未審何名佛法。曰。是心是佛。是心是法。法佛無二。僧寶亦然。士曰。今日始知罪性不在內。不在外。不在中間。如其心然。佛法無二也。祖然之。即為剃髮曰。是吾寶也。可名僧璨。乃受具。說偈付衣法。後三十四載。混迹人間。隋開皇癸丑三月十有六日。因事怡然委順。時年一百七歲。塔于磁州滏陽東北七十里。德宗諡曰大祖禪師。

> A native of Wulao, he was born into the Ji clan. Entrusted with the sacred legacy, he continued to spread the subtle Dharma, diligently seeking worthy successors. In the second year of the Tianping era of the Northern Qi dynasty, a layman of about forty years, who did not reveal his name, approached him and bowed, saying, "Your disciple is afflicted with a chronic ailment. I beg the reverend to help me repent of my sins." The master replied, "Bring me your sins, and I will help you repent." The layman reflected for a long time and said, "I cannot find the essence of sin." The master said, "Then your repentance is complete. Henceforth, rely on the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha." The layman said, "Now that I have seen you, Reverend, I know this is the Sangha. What, then, are the Buddha and the Dharma?" The master replied, "This mind is the Buddha. This mind is the Dharma. The Dharma and the Buddha are not two, and so it is with the Sangha." The layman said, "Today I finally understand that the nature of sin is not within, not without, and not in between. It is just as the mind is—the Buddha and the Dharma are not two." The patriarch confirmed his insight, shaved his head, and said, "You are my true treasure. You shall be named Sengcan." He then gave him the full precepts and transmitted the robe and verse. For the next thirty-four years, he lived inconspicuously among the people. On the sixteenth day of the third month in the year Guichou of the Kaihuang era (593 CE), the patriarch passed away serenely and with equanimity, at the age of one hundred and seven. A stupa was erected seventy li northeast of Fuyang in Cizhou. Emperor Dezong of the Tang dynasty posthumously honored him with the title Grand Ancestor Chan Master.
