### 五祖弘忍大士

> Fifth Patriarch Hongren

蘄之黃梅人。出周氏處女。以栽松道者假陰而生。隨母姓焉。既稟大毉之任。遂嗣。化破頭山。咸亨中。有慮居士者。名慧能。來謁。祖問曰。汝自何來。云。嶺南。曰。欲須何事。云。唯求作佛。曰。汝嶺南人無佛性。安能作佛。云。人有南北。佛性豈然耶。祖陰異之。令著槽廠。逾八月。潛以所傳屈眴伽梨。說偈付之。且曰。昔達磨初至。人未之信。傳衣以明得法。今信心已熟。衣乃爭端。止於汝邊。不復傳也。兼記所隱之地。能禮辭。捧衣南邁。眾無知者。祖自此不復上堂。經四載。至上元二年。忽告眾曰。吾今事畢。時可行矣。即入室。安坐而逝。壽七十有四。塔於黃梅之東山。真身迄今不壞。代宗諡曰大滿禪師法雨之塔。

> The Fourth Patriarch was a native of Huangmei, born to a woman of the Zhou family. It was said that he entered the womb through the influence of a Taoist hermit who planted pine trees. He took his mother’s surname. After receiving full medical training, he succeeded his master and settled on Potou Mountain to teach. During the Xianheng era (670-674), a layman named Lu, also called Huineng, came to visit. The Patriarch asked him, “Where have you come from?” He replied, “From Lingnan.” “What do you want?” “Only to become a Buddha.” “You people from Lingnan have no Buddha-nature—how can you become a Buddha?” Huineng replied, “People may be from the north or south, but how can Buddha-nature have such distinctions?” The Patriarch was secretly impressed and assigned him to work in the mill. After eight months, he secretly passed down the robe and bowl, along with a verse, saying, “When Bodhidharma first arrived, people did not yet believe. The robe was transmitted to show attainment of the Dharma. Now faith is already established, and the robe has become a source of contention. It will stop with you and not be passed on again.” He also told Huineng where to hide. Huineng paid his respects, took the robe, and went southward. No one knew. The Patriarch never again ascended the hall to teach. Four years later, in the first year of the Shangyuan era (674), he suddenly told the assembly, “My work is now complete—I can go at this time.” He entered his room, sat peacefully, and passed away at the age of seventy-four. A pagoda was built for him on East Mountain in Huangmei. His true body remains undecayed to this day. Emperor Daizong posthumously granted him the title “Great Fulfillment Chan Master” and named his pagoda “Dharma Rain.”
