> A monk asked, "What is the mind of the ancient Buddhas?" The master replied, "Though the thousand-year calendar is useless, if you go against it, you'll still be wiped out." The monk asked, "What is the realm of Guangde?" The master said, "A clear stream flows without pause; green trees never wither." The monk asked, "Without explaining the Three Vehicles, how can we speak of the patriarchs' teachings?" The master said, "A prince is born, not through cultivation; someone else determines the mountains and rivers." The monk asked, "What is the point where a student aligns with the truth?" The master said, "A square peg in a round hole." The monk asked, "When people are sick, the king of doctors heals them. But who heals the king of doctors when he is sick?" The master extended his hand and said, "Take my pulse." The monk said, "I don't understand." The master said, "Mount Sumeru is useless as medicine; the four seas are vainly used as soup." A monk asked, "What is the blissful seclusion of a renunciant?" The master said, "A cushion of auspicious grass—you don’t notice autumn." The monk asked, "The ultimate path, not transmitted by a thousand sages—do you transmit it, Master?" The master said, "An iron ball stuffed into the mouth—hard to find someone who can swallow it." The monk asked, "What is the guest within the guest?" The master said, "A prodigal son with no home, drifting like tumbleweed, unaware of the years." The monk asked, "What is the host within the guest?" The master said, "A pearl curtain hung at a thatched door." The monk asked, "What is the guest within the host?" The master said, "A grass mat laid in a dragon tower." The monk asked, "What is the host within the host?" The master said, "Though the crown prince is the rightful heir, he has not yet seen the emperor's face." The monk asked, "What is the thing that never darkens?" The master said, "At midnight, with no lamp or candle, the family letter is clearly read." The monk asked, "How does a humble gate give birth to a noble son?" The master said, "A scholar’s robe does not cover itself." The monk asked, "The essence is subtle and profound—why don't people understand it today?" The master said, "A four-legged beast stands on the ground; heaven and earth are pitch black." The monk asked, "A maiden never married gives birth to a son. What is his surname?" The master said, "By chance, his robe is torn; beyond the gate, no one's tracks." The monk asked, "On a steep cliff, is there gain and loss?" The master said, "Meeting a good opportunity, give him a good push." The monk asked, "What is the eye that never sleeps?" The master said, "At midnight last night, it could not be opened." The monk asked, "What is the secret chamber?" The master said, "A thatched cottage on the main road." The monk asked, "What is the person in the secret chamber?" The master said, "Through countless ages, no one has knocked." The monk asked, "What about when stars gather around the moon at night?" The master said, "Shadows overlap, but their light does not mix."
