### 潭州福嚴良雅禪師嗣洞山初
> Master Liangya of Fuyan Temple in TanzhouDisciple of Dongshan Chushi
居洞山第一座。山參次。僧出問。如何是佛。山答曰。麻三斤。參罷。山至寮謂師曰。我今日答這僧話得麼。云。恰值某淨髮。山曰。你元來作這去就。拂袖便出。師云。這老漢將謂我明他這話頭不得。因作偈呈之。曰。五彩盡牛頭。黃金為點額。春晴二三月。農人皆取則。寒食賀新正。鐵錢三五百。山見。深肯之大惠武庫中誤引此頌為洞山初和尚作。後人又誤認初和尚麻三斤為价和尚麻三斤為价和尚語。二俱訛舛。盖雪竇頌古舉語中但曰洞山故也。住福嚴日。 僧問。如何是和尚家風。曰。入門便見。 問。如何是佛。曰。臂長衫袖短。
> \[The master\] took the position of head monk at Dongshan. One day during a group discourse, a monk came forward and asked, "What is Buddha?" Dongshan replied, "Three pounds of flax." After the talk ended, Dongshan came to the hermitage and said to the master, "How did I answer that monk's question today?" The master replied, "It just so happens I’m washing my hair." Dongshan said, "Oh, so this is how you do things." Then he swept out. The master said, "This old man thinks I don't understand his meaning behind that answer." So he composed a verse and presented it to Dongshan: The five colors adorn the ox's head, Gold is daubed on its brow. On clear spring days of the second and third months, Farmers all follow the same ways. At the Cold Food Festival, "Happy New Year" — Iron coins worth three or five hundred. When Dongshan saw it, he gave it his deep approval. The text from \*Dahui Wuku\* mistakenly attributes this verse to the early master Dongshan Chu. Later people also mistakenly confused Chu's "three pounds of flax" with the elder master Dongshan Jia's words—both errors. This is because the \*Xuedou Songgu\* only refers to "Dongshan" when citing its verses. When the master was residing at Fuyan Temple, a monk asked, "What is the master's family tradition?" The master replied, "As soon as you walk through the gate, you see it." Another monk asked, "What is Buddha?" The master replied, "Long arms, short sleeves."
