> In the Yonghe area of the commandery, there was a man from the Zeng family. In his youth, he abandoned Confucian studies to become a Buddhist monk. He traveled far and wide as a wandering pilgrim, awakening to his own true nature. In his later years, he went to see Qingliang and asked him, "What was it like before the Buddha appeared in the world?" Qingliang replied, "Clouds veil the trees by the sea gate." He then asked, "What about after he appeared?" Qingliang answered, "Shattering the iron-ringed mountain." At these words, he experienced a great awakening and was finally acknowledged by Qingliang. He returned to dwell at Baolong Temple on West Peak, where a crowd of fellow practitioners gathered. This was in the second year of the Xiangfu era.

> Emperor Zhenzong heard of his reputation and sent a eunuch to summon him to the palace. The emperor asked him about the essential teachings of Buddhism. The master stayed in the imperial garden, sitting in deep meditation for long periods without eating. The emperor admired him greatly and bestowed upon him the title "Perfect Purity." Later, the master asked to leave, and although the emperor wished him to stay, he could not be persuaded. The emperor allowed him to go, offering generous gifts, all of which the master declined. The emperor added four attendants, granted him a robe of honor, and ordained ten disciples for him. He even composed a poem to honor his departure. In the fourth year of his reign, the emperor changed the era name to "Xiangfu" (Auspicious Omens), which also honored the master's residence. Someone once asked the master about the core meaning of the \*Yijing\* (Book of Changes). The master replied: "The spirit arises from what is formless and takes shape in what has form. It moves from what has form back to the formless, and only then can it accord with the path of wondrous, perfect, and true enlightenment. Thus, from the forty-nine transformations up to the eleven thousand five hundred and twenty, it explores all principles under heaven and exhausts the full extent of all natures under heaven. This is no different from the teachings of our sage." On the night of the master's passing, he beat the drum to gather the assembly and spoke a verse: "Heaven is not high, Earth is not thick. It is merely that people of this time cannot see through. Just watch the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month— They still face south to see the Northern Dipper." He then passed away silently. When cremated, countless multicolored relics were obtained, and his spiritual bones were gathered into a pagoda. He was seventy-seven years old, with fifty years in the monastic life.
