### 懷安軍雲頂德敷禪師嗣護國遠

> Chan Master Defu of Yunding in Huai'an County <note>Disciple of Huguo Yuan</note>

甞問護國。直截根源佛所印。摘葉尋枝我不能時如何。曰。罷攀雲樹三秋果。休弄碧潭孤月輪。師乃頓釋所疑。遂返雲頂。眾請住持。成都帥請就衙陞座。時有樂營使禮拜起。回顧堦前下馬臺云。一口吸盡西江水淨且置。請和尚吞却堦前下馬臺。師展兩手。唱曰。細抹將來。營使猛省。

> Once he asked Huguo, "When it comes to directly cutting to the root—the seal of all Buddhas—while picking leaves and searching branches is not my way, what is that state like?" Huguo replied, "Stop picking fruit from the clouds in the deep autumn trees. Stop playing with the lonely moon reflected in the emerald pool." The master was suddenly freed from all doubt. He returned to Cloud Summit Monastery, where the assembly invited him to take up residence as abbot. When the governor of Chengdu invited him to give a Dharma talk at the government office, a military musician bowed, then stood up, looked back at the mounting block before the steps, and said, "Setting aside the question of swallowing all the rivers in one gulp, I ask you, Master, to swallow this mounting block before the steps." The master spread his two hands and sang, "Grind it fine and bring it here." The military musician was suddenly awakened.
