> The Venerable Zuhu (Chief of the Hu Clan) was a native of Xiangshui. From his early wandering days, he wore only a single patched robe through all seasons. He once traveled with several elder monks to the Xiang and Mian rivers region. There, a monk vigorously debated the core teachings of the Zen school, showing great eloquence. They ate together at a roadside inn, but the monk kept on arguing endlessly. The Master said to him: “The three realms are but mind; the ten thousand phenomena are only consciousness. With 'mind-only' and 'consciousness-only,' the eyes hear sounds and the ears see forms—whose words are these?” The monk replied: “Those are the verses of Dharma Eye (Fayan).” The Master asked: “What is their meaning?” The monk said: “Because everything is mind-only, sense organs and their objects do not meet. Because everything is consciousness-only, sounds and forms are interdependent.” The Master pressed: “Is the tongue and flavor a pairing of organ and object?” “Yes,” said the monk. The Master then picked up some vegetables with his chopsticks, placed them in his mouth, and mumbled: “How can you say they interpenetrate?” The whole assembly stared in shock, unable to answer. The Master said: “The pleasure of traveling never reaches home. Penetrating reality through views is not what it means to see the Way. Practice must be genuine practice; awakening must be genuine awakening. King Yama is not afraid of wordy people.” The monk withdrew with a bow. Later, the Master returned to Changsha and hid himself in the Three Lifetimes Cave on Mount Heng. A wealthy patron from Xiangyin came to visit Fuyan Monastery and entered the Master's room. Seeing his serene and uncluttered appearance—only a single bowl hanging on the wall, with nothing else—the patron was deeply moved. He knelt and begged: “Shen Ding (Spirit Cauldron) is our family’s field of blessings, but it has long lacked a great teacher. Would you be willing to come with me?” The Master smiled and agreed. The patron carried the Master on his own horse. It took ten years before the Sangha community finally flourished. An old broken bed served as the Master's teaching throne. He endured extreme hardship with unmatched contentment. His virtue and seniority were both esteemed, and Zen communities everywhere revered him like the ancient Master Zhaozhou. \*\*Sermon:\*\* The Master cited Dongshan's verse: “Greed, anger, ignorance—so utterly unknowing. Thank heavens I can recognize them today! Walk—strike; sit—pummel. Tell Mind King to examine them carefully. For endless eons, no liberation. I ask you three: do you know or not?” The Master said: “That's how the ancients spoke. But Shen Ding disagrees: Greed, anger, ignorance—truly unknowing. Yet throughout the twelve hours, I let them be. Walk—go; sit—follow. What more can Mind King decide? For endless eons, inherently liberated—why still ask about knowing or not?” \*\*Sermon:\*\* The Master cited ancient Longya's gāthā (some say Golden Peak): “Studying the Way is like drilling wood for fire—when you see smoke, don't stop. Wait for the spark of gold to appear, then returning home is reaching the end.” The Master said: “Shen Ding doesn't say that. Studying the Way is like drilling wood for fire—when you see smoke, stop right there. Don't wait for the spark of gold, or you'll burn your feet and your head. So tell me, when I speak this way, am I contradicting the ancients, following them, or is there a different principle? Tell me, which person is right—the one who goes that way, or the one who comes this way? At this point, you must have the eye of a true monk. Don't be fooled by anyone. Take care.” \*\*Sermon:\*\* “When the wind doesn't rustle the branches and rain doesn't break the clods, let that be. But how can you do a somersault and land at the Brahma Heaven? If anyone can, come and demonstrate your skill. Is there anyone? Don't make Indra angry.” Later, a monk entered the Master's room and said: “At that time, if I had come forward, turned left once, and returned to the assembly—would that be acceptable?” The Master said: “What do you do when you 'don't make Indra angry'?” The monk replied: “Those who know kindness are few; those who betray kindness are many.” The Master said: “Your nostril is blocked.” \*\*A monk asked:\*\* “What is it like before the wooden fish and drum are sounded?” The Master said: “Look up at the sky, look down at the earth.” The monk asked: “And after they are sounded?” The Master said: “Hold your bowl and ascend the hall.” \*\*A monk asked:\*\* “What about the person trapped in the six realms of samsara?” The Master said: “He doesn't wish to become a buddha.” The monk asked: “Why doesn't he wish to become a buddha?” The Master said: “Even a buddha is not ultimate.” The monk said: “Please give me a word, Master.” The Master said: “Yesterday I still remembered. Today there's no gate for words.” \*\*A monk asked:\*\* “What about going alone with a single horse and spear?” The Master said: “Shen Ding beats the retreat drum.” The monk asked: “What is the ultimate matter?” The Master said: “I doubt you have such hands and feet.” \*\*A monk asked:\*\* “What about clearing away the dust to see a buddha?” The Master said: “A buddha is also dust.” \*\*A monk asked:\*\* “What is the Master's family style?” The Master said: “When hungry, you don't choose your food.” \*\*A monk asked:\*\* “For killing father and mother, you repent before a buddha. For killing a buddha or a patriarch, where do you repent?” The Master said: “When the water rises, the boat lifts.” \*\*A monk asked:\*\* “With seven pure flowers, you bathe this stainless person. Since this person is already stainless, why bathe?” The Master said: “Even purity itself is not established.”
