> Zhenjiang Prefecture, Jinshan, Master Ruixin<note>Dharma heir of Fuchang Shan</note>

> Later, when residing at Tiansheng Temple, the Master ascended the hall and said: "Deshan's one blow—why call it heroic? Jinshan only values his art of stealing the enemy's battle cry to raid their camp. Linji's one shout—why call it cunning? Jinshan only values his way of seizing the bandit's sword to kill the bandit. As for all the other old masters under heaven, they are but people who knock down walls and cut through fences in the capital city. The moment they act, they betray their defeat. Not a single one among them has the skill to steal the white fox fur coat. What Jinshan discerns in this way—when other quarters hear of it, none fail to pucker their lips and push out their mouths. Why? Because now it is said that 'the garden of awakening holds spring breezes, and the Bodhi tree is thick with flowers.' Do they not realize that Kashyapa had his own tradition? They take all profundities as their eyes. As a result, here at Jinshan, the land is vast and people are scarce; few meet one another. Nevertheless, habits have become ingrained and are hard to change. Jinshan would rather freeze or starve to death than ever wear that stinking cloth shirt of a hawk. Why? Because a true spiritual friend unlocks the golden chains for a sick monkey and shatters the jeweled robe for a drunken guest—yet even this cannot stop the frogs from dwelling in puddles and resting among reeds. One should not go into the thicket of tangled vines to speak of mind, speak of nature, speak of profundity, speak of subtlety. Jinshan will never indulge in trivial pursuits. If a single saying harmonizes with the Way, then even death is rest. The great peng bird spreads its wings and covers ten continents; but the fowl by the fence chirp and bustle." Another day, the Master ascended the hall and said: "What the world treasures are the jade of He and the pearl of Marquis Sui. Tiansheng calls them donkey shit and horse dung. What the transcendental world treasures are True Suchness, Liberation, Bodhi, and Nirvana. Tiansheng calls them bubbling broth and a steaming bowl. Tell me, where do such words fall? It is not that I am overly attached to picking and choosing, or that I believe in false views and perverted doctrines. Do you want to know? A fierce tiger does not linger over ordinary meat; a great furnace does not forge an awl that lies in a pouch." A monk asked: "I have a great affliction: I have a body. Before my parents gave birth to me, where was this body?" The Master replied: "Throughout vast ages, it had no location. If you speak of birth and death, all is falsehood." The monk said: "Then it pervades the ten directions, and the mind is not in any place." The Master said: "Muddling around, stirring a post in the mire."
