> A native of Linjiang, he traveled widely among teachers, making enlightenment his sole aim. He studied under Deshan. One day, Deshan ascended the hall and, surveying the assembly, said, "The lion frowns and stretches; the elephant king looks back." The monk was suddenly awakened. Later, when he entered the master's room and recounted his realization, Deshan asked, "How do you ultimately understand this?" The monk glanced back and said, "A donkey in the back garden eats grass." Deshan approved. Later, he went to Xue窦. Xue窦's words struck a chord with him. Delighted by his transcendence, Xue窦 called him, "Xian the Wayfarer traversing the seas," and appointed him to share the teaching seat. Esteemed monks from all quarters revered and also feared him. One day, Xue窦 ordered him to spread the Dharma. But that night, the monk wrote two gathas on the wall and fled. The gathas said: "It is not that I have no heart to carry the lamp of the patriarchs, My virtue falls short, unworthy beside Lingnan's Neng. I leave Xue窦 under the moon at midnight, Lingering, reluctant, in silence, bluer peaks I love and quit." "For over twenty years, across the four seas, I sought teachers and friends, with no idle ease. Today I have reached the mind of no-mind, Yet am driven from the mountain by that very mind." In his later years, the people's pleas became overwhelming, so he expounded the Dharma at Kaixian Temple, fulfilling the hopes of monastics and laypeople alike. Ascending the hall, he said, "My late teacher Deshan said: 'Frosty wind and falling leaves, green amid red. Where is it? One piece in the east, one in the west.' Monastics call this 'flavorless talk.' If you mix everything together, all becomes one. If you separate them, then there's this and that. That is why the patriarch said, 'It is not the wind moving; it is not the flag moving.' Is there anyone who perceives the patriarch? If you have not yet realized, I will spare my eyebrows and explain it plainly. Simply rely on your own illumination and investigate the source. This is called 'leaves falling, returning to the root.' Good people of Chan, the matter of the Buddha Dharma is great. Kaixian can speak so masterfully that heavenly flowers fall in disarray, yet it can't add a single point to your portion. Why? 'It is like climbing a mountain—each must make their own effort.'" A monk asked, "Whose song does the master sing? From whom does your lineage inherit the ancestral wind?" The master replied, "The moon is in the sky." "May I ask: What was the patriarch's intention in coming from the West?" He said, "Luoyang city is ancient." The monk said, "This student does not understand." The master said, "Shaoshi Peak is high." "May I ask: What about the end of the year, when the year's energy has run out?" He said, "As before, early spring is still cold." "May I ask: When rain and snow blanket the sky, why does the solitary peak reveal its summit?" He said, "What is there to cover up?" <note>The content of his inaugural Dharma talk is recorded in the Continued Lamp Record.</note>
