### 邢州開元法明上座

> Master Faming of Kaiyuan Temple, Xingzhou

依報本未久。深得法忍。後歸里。事落魄。多嗜酒呼盧。每大醉。唱柳詞數闋。日以為常。鄉民侮之。召齋則拒。召飲則從。如是者十餘年。咸指曰。醉和尚。一日。謂寺眾曰。吾明旦當行。汝等無他往。眾竊笑之。翌晨。攝衣就座。大呼曰。吾去矣。聽吾一偈。眾聞奔眎。明乃曰。平生醉裏顛蹶。醉裏却有分別。今宵酒醒何處。楊柳岸曉風殘月。言訖寂然。撼之已委蛻矣。眾盡禮以葬之。

> He had returned to his monastic roots not long before, and had already attained deep acceptance of the Dharma. Later, he went back to his hometown, where he led an unassuming life. He was fond of drinking and gambling, often getting thoroughly drunk, after which he would sing a few verses of Liu Yong's lyrics. This became his daily routine. The villagers looked down on him; when invited to a vegetarian feast, he would decline, but if invited for a drink, he would gladly join. This went on for over ten years, and everyone called him the "Drunken Monk." One day, he told the monks in the monastery, "Tomorrow morning, I will depart. Don't go anywhere." The monks secretly laughed at him. The next morning, he straightened his robes, sat down, and called out loudly, "I'm leaving now. Listen to my verse." Hearing this, the monks rushed over to see. He then said: "In all my life, I've stumbled through drunkenness, Yet in my drunkenness, I've kept my discernment. Where will I wake tonight from my wine? By the willows, on the shore, in the morning breeze, under a fading moon." With that, he fell silent. When they shook him, he had already passed away. The monks gave him a full funeral and buried him.
