> Tongchuan Tongshan was from the Shi family. In the fourth year of the Daguan era, he left to take up residence at Zhaoti Monastery, and over time he led ten different monasteries. One day at the hall, he said: "All ten directions gather together; each one studies non-action. This is the place for choosing Buddhas; with an empty mind, you return home having passed the exam. Great assembly, when it comes to seeing, hearing, and awareness—there has never been any gap. How then do you speak of the principle of an empty mind? Could it be that you see without seeing, hear without hearing, and call that an empty mind? Wrong. Could it be that you forget intention, cease thinking, abandon all dharmas, dissolve subject and object to enter the profound mystery, extinguish characteristics and nature to return to the Dharma realm, and call that an empty mind? Wrong. Not like this won't do, not unlike this won't do, and both like this and unlike this won't do either. So what is it ultimately? Do you understand? After a long pause, he said: "If you truly practice non-action, yet nothing is left undone, heaven and hell always follow you. A three-foot staff stirs the Yellow River; the eight-armed Nata watches with cold eyes. Countless fish and dragons all scatter and flee, but he catches the three-legged turtle that follows the river. Strip off its shell, pierce it with an iron awl—the signs of good and bad fortune then shine apart. I ask the white-haired elder of the eastern village: before signs of fortune or misfortune appear, what do you do? Enough, enough. Past and present, spring returns after autumn. Pass the bright days as they come—where else could you find more elegance? Ha!" Then he addressed the assembly again: "Today is the first day of the fourth month. The monk's eyes are black as lacquer. Glancing at the pillar and the lantern, a sudden thunderclap on flat ground. It startles the vajra out the door; at midnight, lost on a wild village road. At dawn, he returns to the front gate—dust and dirt in eyes, ears, and nose. Great assembly, the vajra eye that pierces through the four continents—why has it lost its way? Do you understand? For love of wind and moon, he forgot the spring of his homeland." Then he addressed the assembly: "The bright moon hangs in the sky; the clear pond has no shadow. As the Purple Star turns, the evening sun shines. When the colorful phoenix returns, heaven is about to dawn. Beyond the blue clouds, a stone shoot pierces the sky. Amid the green waves, a clay ox rides the surf. The pregnant jade rabbit crosses the western peak at dawn; the golden rooster holding its chick roosts on the eastern ridge at night. If you understand this, you will then know that outside the night-bright curtain, there is another family style. In the hall of the King of Emptiness, sages and ordinary beings leave no trace. So tell me, what is the matter outside the night-bright curtain? Do you all know? Just as autumn wind enters through the door, whose home does the sound of the washing mallet fall upon?" He then addressed the assembly, citing the example of Xuefeng, who told the community: "The entire great earth, gathered up to the size of a grain of millet, thrown before your faces—you lacquer buckets don't get it. Beat the drum and invite everyone to look." Great assembly, when Xuefeng spoke this way, was there a way out or not? If you say there is, why is the great dharma realm within a single grain? If you say there is not, who was beating the drum to invite everyone to look? If you can understand, no need for further circumlocution. If not, listen to this verse: "Stir heaven and earth, steps turn; who knows to look south and see the northern dipper? The golden crow hurries toward the western mountain at dusk, and at dawn chases the fusang tree, flying at midnight." A monk asked: "The ancients said, 'In a place utterly cut off and without people, gather together and speak of it.' Since it's a place utterly cut off and without people, who gathers to speak of it?" The master replied: "The green mountains and the white clouds." The monk said: "As for the green mountains and white clouds, do they know of existence or not?" The master replied: "If they knew of existence, then there would be people there." The monk said: "Then who is it that certifies this?" The master replied: "The white clouds and the green mountains." The monk said: "Is this not the master's way of guiding people?" The master said: "Don't mistake it." A monk asked: "What about before the ancient mirror is polished?" The master replied: "The spirit furrows its brow." The monk asked: "What about after it's polished?" The master replied: "The Persian snaps his fingers." The monk asked: "Why is this so?" The master replied: "Good deeds never leave the house." In the seventh month, on the twenty-fifth day of the year Ding-si, in the Shaoxing era, he asked for a brush and wrote a verse. Then he sat peacefully and passed away. After cremation, his relics were collected and placed in a stupa at Shoushan on Xueshe Mountain. He lived to be eighty-five.
