### 太宗皇帝

> Emperor Taizong

以　聖極真諦而　廣闢度門。　間發元機。鮮克如對者。如　幸相國府。見僧看經。　上問。看底是甚麼經。云。仁王經。　上曰。既是朕經。為甚却在卿手裏。僧無對雪竇明覺重顯禪師後甞代對曰。皇天無親。唯德是輔。　幸開寶塔。　問僧。卿是甚人。云。塔主。　上曰。朕之塔為甚麼卿作主。僧無對明覺代對曰。盍國咸知。因僧見。　上問。卿居甚處。云。廬山臥雲庵。　上曰。朕聞臥雲深處不朝天。為甚到此。僧無對明覺代對曰。難逃至化。僧入對次。奏云。　陛下還記得麼。　上曰。甚處相見來。奏云。靈山一別。直至如今。　上曰。卿以何為驗。僧無對明覺代對〔巳〕。貧道得得而來。京寺回祿。藏經悉為煨燼。僧欲乙　宣賜。　召問。昔日摩騰不燒。如今為甚却燒。僧無對明覺代對曰。陛下不忘付囑。上嘗夢神人報云。請　陛下發菩提心。因早朝　宣問左右街。菩提心作麼生發。街無對明覺代對曰。實謂今古罕聞。智寂大師進三界圖。　上問。朕在那一界中。寂無對保寧仁勇禪師嘗代對曰。　陛下何處不稱尊。一日。朝罷。擎鉢問丞相王隨曰。既是大庾嶺頭提不起。為甚麼却在朕手裏。隨無對慈明楚圓禪師後甞代對曰。　陛下有力。白雲端禪師拈曰。且道腕頭有力。主天下有力。試請斷看。

> With the supreme and ultimate truth as guide, the Emperor \[宋太祖赵匡胤, Song Taizu\] broadly opened the gates of liberation. He occasionally revealed the hidden principles (of Zen), but few could respond adequately. Once, when visiting the residence of the Prime Minister, he saw a monk reading a sutra. The Emperor asked, "What sutra are you reading?" The monk replied, "The Sutra of the Humane Kings." The Emperor said, "Since it is \*my\* sutra, how is it in your hands?" The monk had no response.<note>Zen Master Xuedou Mingjue later replied on his behalf: "Imperial Heaven is impartial; it only assists the virtuous."</note> When the Emperor visited the open jeweled pagoda, he asked a monk, "Who are you?" The monk replied, "The pagoda-keeper." The Emperor said, "This is \*my\* pagoda; why are you its keeper?" The monk had no response.<note>Mingjue later replied: "Everyone in the nation knows this."</note> A monk came to pay respects. The Emperor asked, "Where do you live?" The monk replied, "In the Crouching Cloud Hut on Mount Lu." The Emperor said, "I have heard that one who lives deep in the clouds does not bow to the court. Why then have you come here?" The monk had no response.<note>Mingjue later replied: "It is difficult to escape the Emperor's transforming influence."</note> Another monk, when summoned to an audience, said, "Your Majesty, do you still remember?" The Emperor asked, "Where did we meet?" The monk replied, "After parting at Vulture Peak, it has been until now." The Emperor said, "What evidence do you have of this?" The monk had no response.<note>Mingjue later replied: "This poor mendicant has come all the way here."</note> The imperial temple was destroyed by fire, and all its sutra collection was reduced to ashes. A monk petitioned the Emperor to bestow another set. The Emperor summoned him and asked, "In the old days, the sutras brought by Kasyapa Matanga were not burned; why are they burned now?" The monk had no response.<note>Mingjue later replied: "Your Majesty does not forget the Buddha's entrustment."</note> Once, the Emperor dreamt that a spirit informed him, "Please, Your Majesty, arouse the Bodhi-mind." The next morning at court, he asked the Buddhist instructors of the left and right streets, "How does one arouse the Bodhi-mind?" They had no response.<note>Mingjue later replied: "Indeed, this is rarely heard of, in ancient or modern times."</note> Master Zhiji presented a 'Chart of the Three Realms' to the Emperor. The Emperor asked, "In which realm am \*I\*?" Zhiji had no response.<note>Zen Master Baoning Renyong once replied: "Your Majesty, where are you not the honored one?"</note> One day after court, the Emperor held up a bowl and asked the Prime Minister, Wang Sui, "Since this was too heavy to lift at Dayu Ridge, why is it in my hands now?" Wang had no response.<note>Zen Master Ciming Chuyuan later replied: "Your Majesty has strength." Zen Master Baiyun Shouduan commented, "Tell me, is it strength in the wrist, or strength from ruling the world? Try to decide."</note>
