### 真宗皇帝

> Emperor Zhenzong

臨御以來。　歷覽貝文。　探賾祖教。乃於華嚴曉然自得。嘗　製偈曰。寂寂太虗空。湛湛如秋水。拂拭本無塵。不屬張王李。因建智海勝藍。偉冠都下。廣延禪衲。馳　詔正覺本逸禪師主之。逸至。入對稱　旨。賜前偈令和。逸謝　恩已。𨤲為四章。一曰。寂寂太虗空。何人達此宗。本來無一物。佛祖永潛蹤。二曰。湛湛如秋水。此心誰可委。唯有悟空人。相逢只彈指。三曰。拂拭本無塵。青天月一輪。堂堂無罣礙。全露法王身。四曰。不屬張王李。從來自家底。山河及大地。通身無不是。　上大悅。乃　錫正覺號。

> Since I ascended the throne, I have read Buddhist scriptures extensively and delved into the teachings of the patriarchs. Through this, I came to a profound realization of the Avatamsaka Sutra on my own. I once composed a verse: "Serene, the vast emptiness, Crystal clear, like autumn water. Wiping, there is no dust at all, Belonging to no one." Thus, I built the magnificent Zhihai Monastery, unrivaled in the capital, and widely invited Chan practitioners. I also issued an imperial decree inviting the Chan master Zhengyue Benyi to lead it. When Benyi arrived, his audience with me was pleasing, so I granted him the verse and asked him to compose a response. After expressing his gratitude, Benyi divided it into four sections: First: "Serene, the vast emptiness — Who can comprehend this principle? Originally, there is not a single thing — Buddhas and patriarchs forever leave no trace." Second: "Crystal clear, like autumn water — To whom can this mind be entrusted? Only one who awakens to emptiness, Upon meeting, simply snaps their fingers." Third: "Wiping, there is no dust at all — In the blue sky, a single moon shines. Vast, without obstruction, fully revealing the Dharma King's body." Fourth: "Belonging to no one — It has always been one's own foundation. Mountains, rivers, and the great earth — The entire body is nothing less." The emperor was greatly delighted upon reading this, and thus bestowed upon Benyi the title of "Zhengyue" (Correct Enlightenment).
