### 開善密庵謙禪師二則

> Two Verses of Chan Master Qian of Kaishan Mi'an

舉祕魔擎叉。霍山往訪。師曰。祕魔尋常氣宇如王。不消一揑。便見四棱塌地。且作麼生免得他道三千里外賺我來。然雖如是。殊不知霍山三千里外已死在祕魔叉下了也。具眼者辨取。

> Lifting the secret demon's trident, Huoshan went to visit. The master said: "The secret demon's usual bearing is like a king, but with a single pinch, you can see it collapse on all four sides. What can you do to avoid it saying, 'You've tricked me into coming from three thousand miles away'? Even so, you fail to realize that Huoshan, from three thousand miles away, was already dead beneath the secret demon's trident. Those with discerning eyes should recognize this."

舉。洞山冬夜與泰首座喫果子次。真如拈云。這箇果子。莫道泰首座不得喫。三世諸佛也不敢正眼󳬇著。師曰。洞山倚勢欺人。真如隨風倒施。今夜忽有人問。山僧有一物。上拄天。下拄地。常在動用中。動用中收不得。未審過在甚麼處。拈起果子便喫。何故。下坡不走。快便難逢。

> \*\*Raise it up.\*\* One winter night, Dongshan was eating fruit with Senior Seated Qin. Zhenru picked one up and said, "Don't say that Senior Seated Qin can't eat this fruit—even the Buddhas of the three times wouldn't dare look at it directly with their eyes." Master Dongshan said, "Dongshan is leaning on his authority to bully others. Zhenru is just going with the wind. Tonight, if someone suddenly asks, 'This old monk has a single thing—above it supports heaven, below it supports earth, always active in use, yet in use it can't be grasped. What's the fault in that?'—just pick up the fruit and eat it. Why? If you don't run when going downhill, you'll miss a rare opportunity."
