Master Fazhao was a distinguished monk of the Pure Land school during the Tang dynasty and the founder of the Five-Assembly Buddha-Recitation method. This work was composed in the mid-Tang period, a time when Pure Land faith was widely spread. Drawing from the Infinite Life Sutra, Fazhao advocated reciting the Buddha’s name through five melodic rhythms and tones, integrating ritual procedures with hymns to enable practitioners to focus their minds on the Pure Land through vocal devotional practices. The content includes guidelines for Buddha-recitation, hymns of praise, and stages of practice, forming a rigorous and practical system. This text is an important document for both the doctrine and practice of the Pure Land school, exerting a profound influence on later ritual forms of Buddha-recitation and revered as a key guide for Pure Land cultivation.
