The "Commentary on the Verses of the Eight Consciousnesses" is a work by Master Guangyi of the Ming Dynasty, providing an explanatory commentary on the "Verses of the Eight Consciousnesses" by Master Xuanzang. This book emerged against the backdrop of the revival of Yogācāra studies in Ming Dynasty Buddhism, with Master Guangyi aiming to systematically elucidate the essential teachings of Yogācāra transmitted by Xuanzang. The work is structured around the six consciousnesses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and mind—along with the manas consciousness and the ālaya consciousness. It delves deeply into the structure and functions of consciousness, as well as the stages of practice for transforming consciousness into wisdom. This work is regarded as an important introductory text to Chinese Yogācāra studies, serving as a bridge to understanding the principles of the Faxiang school. It holds a pivotal position in the history of Buddhist thought, connecting past and future, and remains an indispensable and authoritative commentary for studying Yogācāra teachings.
